It is minor problem indeed but there are a lot of small looters/bandits squads which must be destroyed and it is PITA to battle them manually every time. And at the same time it is quite common at auto-resolve 5 looters to kill 2 knights although the knights are practically invincible from the looter's weapons.
AND it seems the auto-resolve calculates the sieges as open-field battles BUT ONLY if the player troops are involved. This is what happened with my game yesterday (which I specially tested):
Swadia besieged Sargoth - 420 defenders against 850 attackers.
1. My troops (about 35 troops) joined and I played the battle - the defenders easily won (I killed not more then 15 enemies with my bow)
2. My troops joined and I used auto-resolve - the defenders failed miserably - at the end there were 2 (I think it was two, not just me) defenders against 450 attackers left
3. Then I just stayed nearby and waited the end of the battle w/o joining - the attack failed and from the 850 strong attack force survived about 350 attackers
