The art style is cartoony

We all know the graphics look dated but specifically my gripe is with the characters and how they look goofy and cartoony

On the left is what we were expecting, on the right is what we got. Crysis in 2007 looked better and achieved a more realistic art style. What the hell happened? Was there not enough art direction, were interns just having a bash at making characters? Who was the art director?

We’ve seen the character creation for a long time and they’ve had this art style forever now, what’s the point of this post? You want them to go back and reconsider all their graphical decisions now?

Im not sure why you “expected” the graphics to match a drawing rather than expecting them to look like the graphics we’ve been seeing for years from their concept art and demos?

For game assets, stylized art tend not to age too quickly, though they also are less impressive to look at, at least for me. If the game used hyper realistic art style with the current shaders, lightning and meshes of a similar polygon-count, I imagine it's not gonna look as good as the picture shows either.
I mean, warband's models aren't that realistic either but the artworks was cool too. Cover pages rarely match up to the contains within -- it is designed to push sales.
Having written all that, I hope they do work on the shaders more. It lacks contrast and "texture".

Just saying.... this is what we expected.... and this is what we got

how can you have been expecting that? they never showed you that was how the game would look, in fact they have several times showed it would look as it does now? Also quite a few people are already complaining about the game demanding too much about from their computers, thats why you make cartoony graphics, its why WoW was such a great success and can still be played today. So im geussing you must be a troll.

That's key art. Games never look like the key art. The key art is for marketing and to get people excited about the game.

Nobody should ever expect games to look like key art.

You literally can see how the game looks like in 2016. Don't talk like they lied to you lol

Why are you even using an art image as a reference to what a game looks like? That makes no sense.

I dont think it looks cartoonish, it looks realistic to me, as much as it can for the engine. Also, no one was designing the characters, they are randomly named and generated in each new playthrough (except lords, who are named and designed). I like this as it diversifies each game even by a little bit

this goofy style is nice, it has some personality, I prefer that rather than realistic Korean games faces in which everybody is a 10/10 supermodel with no personality
the only issue I have with the face is that 80% of the character look more or less the same....

Borderlands 3 had over 140 million dollar budget and has cartoon graphics and it released just in september. So on talesworlds budget i think they are doing amazing atm. lol

You cannot tell me that in all these years you have not seen a single picture of how the characters will look? If you have not been following the development and are new to the series then I kind of understand albeit expecting the graphics to look like a painting is a bit of a stretch.

I actually think cartoon graphics is more intelligent design from a business perspective than hyper realism graphics anyways, cause you can optimize your game to reach more people.

I don't agree that they have cartoon graphics but they may have gone a little too far on the goofey side. I think having too many people with asymetric faces may be contributing. I think they could make the characters look better with what they have in place.

They DO have cartoony graphics, I don't know why people are saying they don't. However, that's fine. It reminds me of the artstyle from Civilization, which is mighty fine

Yes agreed, the goofy looks does kind of ruin the immersion. Especially when we know it's actually possible to make decent looking characters with their character creator.

The asymmetry levels on many npcs seems like its too high which makes for a lot of goofy faces, but otherwise I think it all looks fantastic. They were never going for a hyperrealistic look. Its more stylized so it looks more like old paintings than video footage. I think this style will also make it easier for modders to create new stuff that matches the overall look than if it was photo realistic.

I really dig the aesthestic in general actually. The faces are really interesting, especially when you see them talking like I recently found out they can do. The thing that makes them seem cartoonish is that they are mugging at the camera blankly.

I personally love the style, sure the characters look a bit odd, but I think there's a certain charm to it. No one is perfect in real life either, you can see some very unique people.
