The Art of Tactics

I'm going to chime in in support of Willelm.  I don't believe he should have been directing like a Total War general.

If we're going to be a bit authentic here, the time for planning is right at the start.  Leaders should choose their dispositions and tell their subordinates the general plan.  Then they are in the lap of the gods as they let the battle play out.  Constant meddling by commanders would have been both extremely difficult to communicate and probably counter-productive.

Leaders would maybe have had a couple of predetermined signals (with banners or indeed horns I guess) but after battle was joined I imagine that, in reality, tweaking, fine tuning, complicated feinting, major changes to objectives etc were all pretty much impossible.

Therefore I believe that faction leaders should plant themselves in the middle of their forces and look confident, not meddle, and weigh in at the schwerpunkt, at the critical moment, to swing the battle.

Disclaimer - Please note of course that I don't claim to be an expert and any resemblance to facts or informed opinion in the above post is purely coincidental.

During the battles, there never was a plan, and if there was, we didn't really hear any of it. We did spend thirty minutes planning for the conquest beforehand, but those plans went to **** the moment we realised the scale of the map. Our plan was to take both of the fortified flags and hold the enemy between them, but 1) we didn't get there fast enough, 2) we never managed any properly coordinated assaults.

Perhaps so, Bedric, but although you can get killed a lot (especially with all these javelins flying around) on horseback and when fighting in the front lines, there is a greater sense of pride, I guess, but that is in my opinion.

Gonna echo the call for battle accounts here! Would really love to hear what the plans were if you'd care to share 'em, and tell us what went right or wrong - what you've learned from it! This goes for all host leaders!

Watching a proper shieldwall keeping its discipline in the frey is a delight. But rare.

Find a way to implement passive shield blocking from that russian mod and shieldwalls will suddenly become not only useful, but necessary
