i love the tactical screen you get when you press backspace because it makes finding enemies easier in the really foggy fights and it also helps me relocate with the bulk of my troops and it makes so that i can tell people orders so much easier

thank you!

i actually dont like it much. im my opinion it ruins the envronment and reality. itd be better if there was just a map and no radar or something but yeah its pretty neat !

Player can't have unit radar but PC can cheat?!?!? No way.

It’s no cheat, it is called blue force tracker. Didn’t know they had it in medieval times but that is another story.
I find it very useful for locating the enemy and your forces, the old way was to tell your forces to charge and they always start moving against the enemy.
I find it less useful for its intended use, to order your forces to a position. For that use a standard map would be more useful so you don’t place your archers on the backside of a hill.

The AI cheats, it always know where the nearest enemy force are. Can be fun to look at, you and some cavalry are chasing an enemy, he is killed and your cavalry change direction towards the next enemy before the body hit the ground.

It's actually a fairly plausible stand-in for what would happen in a real battle: before the battle the leader would have men scouting the terrain to find vantage points and enemy positions (a rough map might then be sketched based on this information), and during the battle he might have men informing him of the enemy's movements so that he could reposition his own men accordingly. The tactical map is admittedly a bit too accurate to be simulating this reconnaissance, but it's still not as "unrealistic" as the all-revealing aerial camera of an RTS.

I still rely on my men most of the time. I can't decide whether they're all psychic or just part bloodhound.

I guess you could say that it's like following sounds, since in M&B you don't get directional sound.

Defiitely an improvement. First off it's a game, so let's not expect complete realism (Enemies know exactly where you are, so why shouldn't you know where they are. Plus you can get an axe in the face and only fall unconcious... so y'know)

Also it allows for more realistic tactical descisions. I mean a commander wouldn't really have to be on a hill for his men to stand there. He'd be able to say "Oy you lot go there and stand there, holding close together while the archers stand ten paces behind you."

Or you want to attack sea raiders, there's a hill and then a large plain, and you know that, so you hide behind the hill until the sea raiders come closer (although they didn't; they just stood there and waited, the bastard copycats).

I use this feature to find where the hell some Horse Archer scurried off too. Its really useful for extremely large battles where you have to micro-manage your unit types.
Would be cool if it was available for Castle sieges so I can tell where scrubs are stuck in walls or somehow not present for the pending battle.

Yes, I love this feature.  I've gone back and played .808 for some mods that haven't been converted to .894 yet, and I constantly find myself pressing backspace and being disappointed when no map pops up

I love seeing how many enemies and allies are left...and whether or not I should start retreating.  Very useful on huge maps when I get disoriented.

i like the radar.. maybe its not that realistic, but atleast i wont have to look forever for that vaegir knight anymore.

Huh? Yes you do. M&B sounds have 3D positioning (it's most obvious when using headphones). Or are you talking about actual surround sound support?

Thats right, I had to use headphones while recording my movie because the output for the speakers was redirected to input so it was captured.

The directional sounds are very important, even wear headphones while playing Quake so I can hear around corners easily and assists with player prediction.

Hearing hooves thundering behind you is cool.

For me the most useful situations are:
-"Where's the charge I'm expecting? Oh they're camping."
-"Where is the last enemy horseman?" Then I can tell my men to hold, forcing everything to converge on me; a good way to steal the last kill for myself.

i wish it worked in sieges, that's when i most need to know where that last niggly little crossbowman is

I always just follow my allies. Had them charge and I would just go in that direction and then have them 'Follow Me' and set up on a hill. Never failed. The tactical screen is pretty useful as I like to set up archers and have Cavalry go to the side of the enemy force, have infantry in back of archers then have Infantry attack and seconds before they are in battle I have my cavalry charge from the side or rear. I've defeated 100-150 man armies with 0-1 wounded.

I think that the maps shouldn't be randomly generated. Have an actual sketch of the map for the tactical screen and not have the position of the enemy. Also, make it so that your allies (and enemies) cant see each other and will go in a slow steady pace until they find each other. Then again, you would have a good idea of where they are from when you attacked them (got attacked) on the world map so its not like you would be completely bliss. I REALLY hope that strategy is worked out for battles and that sieges have more then one little ladder going up them when this game is released or I will be really disappointed.

I know!

There's always some new hiding spot, like stuck on the wall under the seige ramp, or at the edge of the map away from the castle.  Often times, my bloodhounds can't seem to sniff him out.
