Texturing existing models

Im trying to texturte some objects but i want to edit meshes already made. All of the guides have you go through wings 3d and all of this crap. Just tell me how to take like some chainmail from the game and texture it

Or just find the .dds file, open it with DXTbmp (or similar) and edit the texture.
