technical troop problem with .584

Harumph.  Well, it's working.  I live in a somewhat remote part of Africa and my satellite internet downloads at speeds between 1 and 5 Kb/s on a good day.  Nothing on a bad day.  I should have this in about 4 days.

The thing that I really didn't understand was how I could see the missing troops in troops.txt but they didn't show up in-game.  Any ideas why?

Man, that's tough.

I have a mental image of you sitting in the middle of the Congo, with the jungle encroaching all round. Your DVD drive has broken due to the climate and general neglect, and your only link to the outside world is a 1K line....hopefully your M&B install wasn't the only thing that was keeping you sane...

Sorry

Mr. P, you're so close!  I AM in the Congo, but my DVD drive failed because of the cheapo chinese DVDs that I get around here.  I have a nice job with a good company, and they've given me a house to live in and a 4x4 to cruise around in, but there are nevertheless some massive infrastructure limitations.  I also have MII:TW and STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl to keep me sane.  I wish I had planned better.  I've been here for 10 months, and I've discovered that I need a good internet connection like a fish needs water.  I'm not proud to admit that, either, but you accustomed to a certain level of lifestyle.  I get back to the developed world for a few weeks in September, so I'm going to stock up on sanity preserving items then.

Wow, tough station! I read this book last year http://www.bloodriver.co.uk/ and was blown away by it. Sounds like you're doing ok out there though. If you get a chance to reinstall M&B and this experience hasn't discouraged you too much, you should check out Native Expansion again; it's a blast. Good luck with the job!

That looks like an interesting book.  I live in the east part of the country where it's mostly mountains, but I flew over the jungle once and it's just an immense sea of trees punctuated by the occasional river.  It's easy to imagine that dinosaurs still roam there.

So I finally finished the download, reinstalled, and I still don't think I have the new troops.  I saw Praetorian Knights in a Vaegir town with 88 marksmen.  I'm going to start a new game and see if I can upgrade the Khergit troops, but I'm wondering if there's another file that works in association with troops.txt that might not have updated properly, and therefore doesn't reproduce the troops properly?  I really have no idea.  I don't get it.

Don't let the "troop tree" threads confuse you. Most of them are outdated anyway.

Start a new game, and check the Khergit armies. If they contain "Orloks", "Dargas" or any other funny-named unit, then you know everything is in order.
Or just drop by the Capital cities from time to time. They do recruit Elite units, but it can take some time.

Is there a script that initialises and tells the game, place 88 Marksmen in Khudan at startup, or whatever? Maybe that just doesn't include the new troops, and if you give them time, they'll upgrade automatically. You just won't see them for a while.

EDIT Scratch that idea, Ivory Watchmen are garrisoned in Reyvadin on Day 1 of a new game

PS Happy Birthday Lord Samuel! What are you now, 828?

SUCCESS!

So I deleted the Native Expansion directory completely and tried playing the game.  Guess what?  It still worked!  No idea why.  I searched my computer for Native Expansion, and discovered a strange duplicate file in a module directory exactly like normal, but it only had the deleted module and none of the others.  Kind of a ghost folder or something.  I deleted that, and voila, NE wouldn't run anymore.  The reinstall went fine, and now I have Borons and Narloks or whatever.

Thanks for the help, everybody!

Very very weird... where was this ghost module directory located? Are you using Vista?

Yeah, I'm using Vista 32.  The directory was exactly where you would expect it to be, called exactly what it should be: C:\program files\M&B\modules.  There were actually two modules in there, because I had to test out this thing about deleted modules still working.  That's when I did the windows search and found the mystery directory.  I deleted the two modules, then clicked on "back" or "up" to go back to the M&B directory, and I got an error message saying something to the effect about something not existing where it was supposed to.  I think it's because the directory I was in wasn't supposed to be there, and it wasn't possible for me to use that particular window to navigate around my computer.  But I don't really know that, and I didn't make any special note of the error message.

Otherwise, I agree.  Very very weird.

One other thing is that in effect I had TWO module directories.  One with about 6 or 7 modules that I tried, which is the correct one, and then also the mystery directory that shouldn't have existed.  Two directories with the same name and the same place and different content.

Aw, thank you, Josef. You didn't forget! <3
No, I'm just 827. How did you know, anyway?

I thought it would be my crappiest birthday ever: jobless, loveless, pennyless.

Then, in three days: BAM!
- A friend who owed me money gave me 500€,
- Then I got an unexpected and really cool job offer,
- And that nice girl I had met in March(!) and never called back (out of pure shyness) suddenly contacts me from India, and says she'll back in two months!

Life. Wow.

There was a big slice of birthday cake in your profile that day. Seriously. I thought you'd put it there yourself.

That's brilliant. Isn't it cool when you can say, Life is Great. 'Cos it is.
