TaleWorlds Forum Modding Contest[April 2018][Scening]

Users who are viewing this thread

Here is the information on when the scenes will be playtested by the community. Everyone is welcome.

Time and Date: Saturday 5th May 2018., 19:00 BST, 20:00 CEST, 11:00 PDT.
- You can use this to check the current BST time.
Server: *US_GK_Test*

The testing will be open to everyone for about an hour, we'll do at least one Siege round on each submitted scene. Standard round timer will be set to 10 minutes.

Big thanks to Veni Vidi Vici and the GK for providing the server!

Do you guys give permission to test/use these maps on MountAndSiege ? Probably they will be edited a bit.
What a pity these kind of contests came so late.

According to the rules, all submissions are open source.

We plan to offer the sceners to patch/bugfix their scenes after the testing on Saturday, and then pack and release the scenes as an open source pack.

You are free to grab them from the thread here as well, but note they may not be bugfree.

About the contests coming late - it's better late than never

We didn't have too many submissions on this one, but hopefully an established format and some news spread will help future contests, and the contests in Bannerlord.

If it was a single player scene, I would also have taken part. Maybe you will think about single player scening as contest in the future.

I've updated my scene! As it's OSP now, everyone feel free to modify it as much as they want.

The Results Are In

We've reached the end of the first scening contest on the forum! The overall conclusion is that the contest was a success - we may have not gotten a large amount of submissions, however the feedback on the format and rules was very valuable, and hopefully this is the start of a good community tradition. The submissions, although few in number, were very good and it was a pleasure to test and review them. It was a close call between the first two places, and we're sure they'll be put to great use!

Judges Update: The final assessment does not include Gokiller's points, therefore the maximum score is 120 points.
Rewards Update: Read the bottom of the post for a rewards update.

1st Place - Suspicious_Man's Kalkan Castle - 81/120 points
SjA9mUI.jpg
The winning scene of the first contest is best described as a really well-rounded scene. It received even scores in all the categories(20/21/20/20) and its greatest feat is the successful implementation of a two-tier assault, which is rather difficult to pull off on this scale. It's a large scene made for bigger sieges, and it pulls of the scale and timing very well. The landscape and the castle complement each other beautifully, and the castle composition is interesting and innovative. For such a large scene it has a surprisingly small file size, and excellent performance - however that could be further balanced with detailing the spacious castle courtyards which feel a little bit empty. Congratulations to Suspicious Man for making this, we're sure it'll see extensive use!

2nd Place - Kicking Joub's Swampy Castle - 76/120 points
L2kJZ9I.pngg
Coming at the (really close!)second place we have a completely opposite scene in terms of scale. Swampy Castle is an incredibly compact castle, and it captures the feeling of tightly packed sieges. The scene was awarded 76 points distributed as 24/16/16/20 in the four categories. As it can be seen, the strongest part of the scene is the visuals - the lush swampy forest and landscape and a ruined, overgrown castle in it. It is also the smallest, and the best performing of the scenes. It also implements a two tier assault like Kalkan Castle, however the implementation is not as balanced, and most of the fight is concentrated at the second tier, and there also seem to be too many entrance points for attackers. With a little bit of tweaking, this compat scene is a very good candidate for popular siege servers.

3rd Place - Bing Razer's Snow Castle #1 - 62/120 points
K0NPPfI.jpg
The biggest surprise of the contest is definetly Bing Razer's Snow Castle #1. The somewhat less impressive visuals were not the best sign at first, however the scene's basic principles were quickly shadowed by the gameplay value. The gameplay is focused onto fewer points and thus it was more engaging and fun. It was a general surprise to all testers, and proved to be a fun and compact scene. A visual rework however, is highly recommended. The file size was good and the scene performed well. The rating by categories is 9/20/12/21.

4th Place - Andzi Proxy's The Pyke - 53/120 points
SYTdfLp.jpg
Since there were only four submissions, each deserves to be mentioned. The Pyke is a very ambitious scene, however it has some issues. The map has some good new ideas and features, and it attempts to go for a multi-tier assault as a long-shaped castle which is not easy to pull off. It falls short in attacker travel time and some gameplay bugs. It'll take a some reworking to make the scene usable on most servers, however we commend the effort and time that went into crafting this scene, and it'll be rewarded with a participation badge. The rating by categories is 15/10/15/13.

Rewards Update

Since the next contest has raised a prize pool of $100 thanks to the awesomeness of Khamukkamu and Cozur, our resident moderation tyrant philanthropist Duh is going to provide all of the rewards from this bundle to the first three places. There are some interesting games, but also CryEngine related assets to experiment with. The rewards will be distributed as follows: the #1 place can pick three, #2 can pick two, and #3 can pick one of the items from the bundle. The leftovers can then be distributed again, in agreement with the winners(f.e. if someone only wants the CryEngine stuff).

Afterword

Big thanks to everyone who took part in the organization and implementation of this contest. Big thanks to the judges Ruthven and Veni Vidi Vici who participated in the tests and reviewed the submissions. Thanks to Veni and the Golden Kingdom for providing the test server, Efe Karacar who crafted the custom badges, Duh for the rewards, King Arthur from Mount and Siege, and the various users for their feedback and testing, and finally the creators who submitted their scenes. Looking forward to the next edition of this contest!

I tested Swampy Castle (rhodoks vs nords) and Kalkan Castle (vaegirs vs swadia) with 115/120 players.
- Swampy Castle: players liked the map design. The map seems too pro defenders, but it had a bug with side ladder (the one at side of flag) and that could make the difference. With some edits and tests it should be ready for rotation.
- Kalkan Castle: players liked the original map layout, remembering krak des chaveliers. But all agreed that it's too big and a bit dispersive/confusing. Attackers never reached/saw the flag.

The Pyke is a nice map, even if it needs many edits. Personally i would have put it on second place and Snow Castle on fourth.

Thanks.

Sorry it took me a bit, wasn't around for the weekend, but I've now fixed the bugs in Swampy Castle. Any suggestions for making it a bit easier for attackers are welcome, even if having fewer players for such a small castle might help in the first place  (and yeah the ladder working probably helps too) As always, feel free to use the scene for anything.
