Took you quite long to find that one out.

And now go back to farming SNC parties, and train those rescued prisoners up to Cobra Warriors. We´re talking about serios business here. Soupplate sized horseshoes fixed on almost invincible mounts.

Try them and repost your results. And please keep in mind, more than three exclamation marks is the sign of a truely insane mind.

Excellent idea. Not even war spears will drop those Netherworld chargers. Time to start taking snake cult alive. What about the Anaconda Knights, can they be trained up to or do you need to take the Anaconda knights themselves alive.

Anaconda knights fall dead, havent you heard their noises? like undead or demons, their rumbling inform you that they cannot be obtained in any way and fall dead

So  do Cobra Warriors - they tend to die like flies as they aren´t durable and very susceptile to missle fire. But it´s fun to see those bastards getting chopped to pieces because they´d have ended head up on spike anyways. So why not make some use out of their perishing?

Does anyone know if armoured crossbowmen can be used effectively as swordsmen? They've got better sword skill than kierguards, almost as good skill as huscarls, and they have great shields and armour. Being able to tear enemies apart with their crossbows is a bonus. It seems to me that all you've got to do is order them to stop firing when enemies get too close.

Yes, armored crossbowmen are formidable in melee, and their shields can absorb and protect them from more missile fire than any non noble troop i have used. A good strategy when having a ranged stand off with another army is to order them to hold fire so they protect themselves with their shields. Let the enemy archers run their arrows dry then start raining bolts on them. If they need to come to melee you dont need to worry about them as much as you would with other archers. The only problem with armored crossbowmen is that they take much longer to train than other troops.

Not really a tactic but a very minor complaint. I wish there was some way I could have more time to set up my forces. Either increase the distance between the opposing armies or give players an option to preplan deployment.

While realistic that a group of marauding Jaturs would charge my archer line as quickly as possible... you'd think being a skilled tactician I'd have the option of NOT forming the archer line in the first place. The 30 seconds between the onset of battle and when their cavalry hits me really has me scrambling quite a bit to line my troops up right. Some of them don't make it.

Really now? You do know you can press the u key to disable formations, yes?

And your best bet against Jatu or any other fast enemies who´ll immediately charge due to Vicky (the friendly combat tactic AI) and your army setup is immediately hitting backspace and ordering your troops about on the minimap.

Empire Armoured Crossbowmen are a steady backbone of the archery line and excellent support in a melee. For pure melee, they´re too precious. Sure, they can stand their ground, which makes them excellent for siege offenses but against dedicated infantry and cavalry they end up in seriuos problems.

You may want to use Fierdsvain Archers. They´re more infantry than archers and easier to replace. True, they suck at shooting but still. Together with the easy to train Fierdsvain Axer and Armoured Axer they´re quite - but wait - if you use Axers and Armoured Axers you won´t use Archers at all.

If you general training skill level is high enough, you may use them as you please. If not, save them for important engagements.

Does anyone have some tactics on missile cavalry? I think they are the most powerful force on the battlefield: mobile, versatile, and deadly at range. Too bad I don't know how to get them to behave like missile cavalry.

I remember playing another mod, where when you ordered missile cavalry to charge, they would start circling the enemy in a counterclockwise direction, so their left side faced the enemy and they could shoot. They'd continue circling the enemy position, peppering them with arrows, and keep out of reach of heavily armored knights.

Is there a way I can get them to do that here? Charging just has them run all over the place. I want them to have like a "skirmish" option, for those who've played total war games.

Its actually built into warband for the individual mounted archers to try that. Given the size of battles it is not possible for them to truly evade every single enemy... There are just too many, and they don't like staying stationary while being peppered with arrows. I've seen my own do it a few times, but it was at the end and most noticeable when its a single heavy infantry unit who can take a lot of arrows and keep going. Had 70 archers circling one guy who could take the hits. Terrain also limits it.. The AI isn't good at dodging trees, rocks, the edge of the battlemap...

I have played around with horse archers a bit, D'shar have the best horse archers by far. Not because of their armor or skill but because of their D'shar coursers and riding skill which makes them lightning fast, easily able to outrun any knight. Only Noldor can catch them. Order them to follow you and ride circles around the enemy, they will scatter like crazy and be easy targets for your archers. Also you can use the minimap to issue them waypoints to cricle around an enemy while you and some heavy cav get in there to draw their attention and expose their backs. They do circle enemies in this but they will circle a specific enemy without regard for other enemies around them, meaning during their circle they could run head on into a fierdsvane shield wall.

I usually use them to ride out initially to heavily harass the enemy formation and draw them out from their spawn, but not to win the battle for me. First i harass the crap out of them and get the horse archers out safely back behind the rest of the troops, then i order a heavy cavalry line charge

to charge through whatever they can with a waypoint behind the enemy, then give them the actual "charge" command to commence real combat. Then i issue the horse archers to charge in and take advantage of the enemy while they attempt to fight your heavy cavalry.

The strength of the horse archer is in harassment, dont just give them the "Charge" command or they will all die. Use them to get the enemies attention, make them break formation as they and their shields get peppered with arrows, then order the clean up crew in while your horse archers ride away with your enemies tailing them.
