Tactics

By now we ALL know that Prophesy of Pendor is a challenge, even on the simplest difficulty. You can have a magnificent army that you spent months perfecting and building only to have it ripped away from you by a Jatu or Heretic army.
The very thing that makes this game great, and makes us think and not just f1+f3.

So, what tactics do you employ? What troops do you use? We all have that ace up our sleeve to defeat a troublesome enemy... What is yours?

Throw in some terrain. How you deal with the Jatu in an open field is not how you deal with them in the woods or with rivers.

My method works for ALL factions, but the minor factions are where it has some issues, mainly the Jatu.

I line up a mighty horde of Silvermists and let them massacre all foes that get close enough.  If the enemy makes it past a certain point, I let my Hero Adventurers charge, they wipe out the few that make it, then I have them fall back to their previous position.

Then, I do a massive final charge to wipe out the enemy.

Ta-da!

It suffers against hilly terrain and forested terrain, but works WONDERS in rivers.

The only tactics i applied so far was distracting enemy cavalery myself, and tell my army charge, so i wont get much cassulties from first massive charge. Still not sure how much it helps tough

The first charge of couched lances it what decimates armies. That's what makes the Jatu deadly.

Here is a small siege tactic that i use once on the wall, it is brutally effective.

* Order assault troops like Gladiators or Berserkers to wait for infantry to make their way up the ladder first. You can send them up also and order them to follow you once you have broken through the top of the ladder, but this can cause the AI to clog up and not move past each other

* Once you have broken through the defence at the top of the wall, order them to follow you and use an alternate route to the rest of your army. Clean up archers on the way.

* Completely flank the enemy and let the rape commence.

My army is primarily composed of archers (preferrably Ebony Gauntlet Knights or any archer before they're available). My tactic against the Jatu and the other cavalry heavy armies is simple but bloody (for both sides).

1. Line your archers behind your spawn point, bonus points if there are hills/mountains
2. You (as leader) charge on and lead the Jatu charge, make sure all of them follow you.
3. Once they're following you, lead them near the middle of your archer line
4. Stop, raise your shield (preferably a tough one), and block the first few lancers charging at you
5. They all get stuck
6. Listen to the beautiful sounds made by the arrows and bolts

Never thought of that. That would be very effective. I faced an army of 40 Jatu with my Ravenstern troops, and I had my knights (Sir Roland and... Sir Royce?) charge to distract the Jatu, giving me time to make my infantry make a tight shieldwall and the archers behind. As the Jatu merely waddle into the infantry (Their initial charge is gone) the Infantry swarm them while the Archers pick them off... works well enough.

Thought i would repost this tactic in this thread since it seems the most appropriate.

Hands down the most effective cavalry tactic i have ever used !

I got a complete wrap on the enemy, tried it on a large Fierdsvane and it worked so well it boggles the mind.

A foward wedge of your toughest cavalry, and a spread line of lancers up the rear. Send them in at the same time, order the wedge a waypoint behind the enemy so they charge straight through and split the formation then order them to charge, they will likely get surrounded quickly by a large force but this is good. The secondary wave will be close behind, so the heavy cavalry that were in the wedge will receive backup as quick as possible. Order the line to pass through the enemy, once the line has passed many will have stopped already and started combating the enemy. Order the line to charge once they have passed and the enemy force that is surrounding the initial wedge will be surrounded themselves, likely most knocked down in the process.

The beauty of this is that the tactic can be employed quickly with cavalry, so their cavalry wont have even left the formation before all your forces hit, and when the secondary wave hits the enemies attention will be completly on the wedge, so your line of heavy hitters can start striking at their backs and scattering the enemies attention everywhere.

If the formation is thin enough, the enemy will be split completely into 2 groups. I found Hero adventurers in the wedge especially effective because once they're in melee they will try to get away and use horse archery so are far less likely to die in the process.

* Moment before the charge

* Enemy formation split completly and quickly surrounded. Enemy cavalry doesn't even know what to do.

* Another battle, Fierdsvane shield wall completly split by wedge passing through, then flanked by lancers with their backs turned.

Do wedges actually split the line in this game?

Lines are easy, you kill what is in the center the AI shuffles the entire line to fill that gap.. Its more common to see a tight knit group instead of a lien though. Don't think many cav will punch a hole through a fierds zerker ball.

If you order the wedge to charge THROUGH their formation yes they will pass right through, creating a gap in the centre for your cavalry line to move through and get more surface area. Used this in a few battles now and unless the formation is very deep like a Fierdsvane Huscarl shield wall heavy cavalry will pass right through. If you have exceptionally heavy cavalry a wedge can pass right through almost all infantry formations.  And even if they dont the wedge will get surrounded, which is good because it means the line coming up behind the wedge will counter-surround the enemy and lance the enemies backs rather than their shields.

Here we go. Just confirmed it for you. Fierdsvane shield wall completly run through by a heavy cavalry wedge. You need to use the mini-map to order a waypoint BEHIND the enemy formation so they pass through without stopping to fight. Then your line comes through while their backs are turned. On the mini-map The green dots are my wedge formation cavalry, yellow dots are the clean up crew.

Fierdsvain infantry drop with the Jatu.  Mainly because their lances bust heads, and the fools try to throw axes at the Jatu.

Oh, the good old Jatu strategies....

Someone posted a nice strat against them... make a line with your cavalry-mounted companions, order them to dismount and hold position just behind their horses. The horses will act as meat shields and the jatu will get stuck on them, and then promptly killed by the dismounted troops.

My strat is better, but could be considered as cheating....

Order your troops to follow you and head back from your spawn point, to the edge of the map. Order your cav to dismount there, and everyone holds position. Then you go and gather the jatu to follow you to the edge of the map, not directly into your line of troops, but a short distance away from them. Jatu gets stucks on the edge of the map, and you order your troops to charge. Easy win.

well the AI Seems to be a bit stupid still for my taste, i've been playing for about 500 days ingame, and every single battle they stay on their side for about 1 minute, then suicidaly rushes me without any thought, or they do this instantly and charges into me with horses followed by infantry even tho i have the advantage in units.

i mean cmon why do they do this?

all tactics i use, find the biggest hill, put archers on it, put inf and cav infront of archers, sit on your ass, and win.

if it doesnt work, do the same, but take the cav and poke the other mans formation abit, and then he rushes you mindlessly.

needs some workin on i think, they are to much aggressive, and never seem to put on a fight with me.

Oh my god i just discovered the best way to get infantry as prisoners!   Form a tight wedge with heavy cavalry, then use the minimap to make them charge through the enemy, get another run up and charge through again. The horses hitting deal blunt damage so you'll knock out a ton of them. It works best if you rides circles around the enemy to break their formation and scatter them so your wedge can easily charge through them like a knife through butter. Just got 34 Fierdsvane prisoners out of a group of 70.

Took you quite long to find that one out.

And now go back to farming SNC parties, and train those rescued prisoners up to Cobra Warriors. We´re talking about serios business here. Soupplate sized horseshoes fixed on almost invincible mounts.

Try them and repost your results. And please keep in mind, more than three exclamation marks is the sign of a truely insane mind.
