I just got this game a few days ago, and i have to say...its amazing! Never have i purchased a game only a few hours after downloading the demo. Its completely unique and contains the absolute PERFECT balance between fun and realism. Anyway, one aspect that could be fairly easily fixed and add alot to the strategy and fun involved in a battle would be the use of a few new formations. This is just a few ways accomplish the same thing really. A little bit of this i noticed was already covered in a previous post, but not all...so here goes!
1. Implement a "tactical battle view". Set it up so you can pause the game, go to a top view, and move units into positions much like an RTS. (Just for positioning troops, not to actually play the battle in.) I don't know how many times i order my troops to do something...and only a few of them decide to listen and the rest run off to their glorious doom or have their vision (ability to fire) completely abstructed by a mountain!!! ahh!!!!
2. This would be a bit easier to implement. You could set up a formations option window under the party display window, where you could set your troops up in whatever position you want them relative to your Hero before battle. Then set a key bind so that when pressed, they enter the pre-set formation during a battle.
3. Or, simply add a sixth command for them to enter a basic formation. Maybe, Hero in back, archers lined up in front of him, infantry lined infront of the archers and staggered so that archers can fire through the gaps, and any cavalry set up on the sides for flanking. Something like that.
Just some ideas, let me know what you all think.
