Ye olde Rob Roy, in which Liam Neeson delivers Scottish Asskicking to Tim Roth.

I'm just wondering about which swords the two combatants are using. The proper names, please, if possible.

(And if anyone is knowledgeable of European fencing, I'd also like to know if you recognize any of the forms used in the fight scene.)

Liam is using a cutlass either a basket-hilted broadsword or a scottish basket-hilt claymore, and the other is using a form of a swept-hilt rapier.

It's a cutlass? I thought it was a broadsword (scroll down the article a little).

I am mistaken.. It's not a cutlass (I only watched the beginning and noticed the basket hilt and blade width). It could be a broadsword  or possible a scottish baskethilt claymore http://museumreplicas.com/p-197-brass-basket-hilt-claymore.aspx

Sorry  I"ll try to be awake before posting again.

He inflicts a small cut to Liam Neeson with it, and the blade does appear a bit too 'whippy' to be a rapier.

EDIT: Was probably wrong on the 'cut' comment, as it was left unsharpened a significant portion of the time, but it's still too short to be a rapier. The Wiki article on the movie also says that it's a smallsword.

What I like is that Liam Neeson, aside from looking as cool as usual, is fighting a rapier-wielding foe with a BROADSWORD. With a very full basket-hilt, meaning that it must be a lot heavier than that flimsy piece of bending metal that ... Archibald uses. So kudos to the Scot (he is a scot, right ?)

Liam Neeson's sword looks like a schiavona:

Neeson's from Northern Ireland, methinks.

Yeah, but in the film, he's wearing a kilt and the guy that talks from him also wears tartan. As for the Schiavona, that is a possibility D'Sparil.

I think the film Rob Roy is about the English occupation of Ireland, not Scotland. I could be wrong though.

yes, yes u are wrong. Robert Roy MacGregor is from Scotland.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Roy_MacGregor  i've been to the grave. pretty lil place.

The sword used by Liam Neeson appears to be Scottish basket-hilted backsword.

The characteristic features are: Basket hilt with velvet liner, round or knobbed pommel instead of Schiavona's "cat's head pommel", single-edged straight blade which may have sharpened false edge.
