Swing and thrust?

The thrust for any weapon, aside from some lances I think, is always piercing damage as oppose to cutting or blunt damage. So the thrust is most effective against more heavily armored targets because that is what pierce is meant for. But swinging is easier to do for most since it requires less aiming but then the trade off in the case of a sword is that it is cutting damage so it does less damage on heavily armored units.

Thank you! I have been wondering this for some time

You can examine your weapons while in inventory/merchant menus. For example a sword has stats of "thrust 20p damage", and "swing 25c damage". This means that the thrust attack makes lower basic damage, but the "p" indicates that it does pearcing damage, so it is better to use against heavily armored targets. the "c" of course means "cut". "b" stands for blunt, which does usually the lowest basic damage, but armors don't really cover the enemy much from it.
