I think its stupid that they will fight every battle when they have no chance. They used to be offered term of surrender. I mean the lords have to care about there men, don't they?

And more importantly, care for thier own skin!
Yeah enemy lords could offer you a lot....
gold
a truce (just between the two of you)
goods
information
maybe even a fief!
I can imagine that a defeated lord would squirm as much as possible in an effort to survive!
They could even say something like 'I have been defeated! You were a worthy opponent, If you promice to ransom me back to XXXXXXXXX I am sure it will be made worth your while'
Which could either end in another lord attacking you and trying to free him or him paying you the ransom for his safe return.

I like the idea, but I like renown too.

Quality and quantity comparison would be the ideal to determine wether he would or not surrender.

Oh, and I also agree with stratus' idea.

My suggestion would be as follows -

Farmers, Bandits (all non enlisted)
If outnumbered 5 to 1, will offer gold to survive
if outnumbered 10 to one, will surrender and become your prisoners

Caravans
If outnumbered 3 to 1, will offer gold for survival
If outnumbered 5 to 1, will offer some recourses and gold for survival
if outnumbered 12 to 1, will surrender

Regular Armies
If outnumbered 5 to one, will offer gold
if outnumbered 10 to one, will fight heroically
if outnumbered 15 to one, will surrender

I was thinking something like:

If the total of the noble's army strength (average lvl * number of troops) is highly inferior to yours they would surrender.

i have had a 2 lords surrender when defending a castle although by the time they gave in it was pointless to even let them escape as they only had about 6 troops including them versus 50+ of mine.

I would imagine, that bandits and peasants and whatnots would not pick fights with army even 1/3 larger than their numbers.. I mean, bandits want's "easy money" and peasants.. well they would need to be really agitated to pick up fights... They are after all civilians..
Besides I'd like todo some easy drafting in field, from peasants..

When facing imminent death, I suppose even sturdiest of fighters take their chances against enprisonment rather than dying for vain.. Then again, prisons weren't that inviting back then, and probably you didn't get on parole with good behavioir... So maybe Nobles would offer money and some such to save their hide.. Would they do that for their men.. that depends

And Like Cumandante said, it would be better to calculate army strength rather than sheer numbers.. Surely 50 knights are more frightening than 50 peasants, would you not agree

Yeah. I think that they should be willing
to surrender, in some cases. But, it's not
too likely. Maybe a slight chance, when odds
are bad.

So if you have a huge party you can just roll around the map and everyone just folds?

What's the fun of that?

Actually, I think it should be a combination
of odds, and morale. Some might just head for
the hills. And again, all a matter of chance.

yes but I would like a chance not to fight them and still get something b/c I remember being level 5 and 6 just having 30  men and running into the kings party with 30 knights and like 100 infantry. Sometimes you have to consider your men and your life, So why wont they.

O and one quick thing.....

Why is it that when we get knocked out the battle ends and all the fighting stops but we knock there lord out they keep going like nothing happened.

if killing the enemy leader caused the battle to be won in ur favour, then u could just pick him out everytime and its wouldn't be as much fun.

Then why can't they have the battle continue after we are gone like when you order your soldiers to battle with out you

if u get knocked out the battle continues n u can come for the next wave but ur wounded and have less health.

I know what you mean; the units autocalc and usually get their arses handed to them by a swarm of enemy weaklings...

I'd rather have a feature which gives you a chance to recover from the blow that knocked you out; is a tough soldier going to stay unconscious for long if he's got his allies around him who'd give him a good shake?

If you weren't more than -10 health and one of your party members had high medical skills then perhaps there should be a chance that upon being hit with a blow that would knock you out you have a chance to stay conscious, but only on 1 health.

Failing that it wouldn't hurt if the game had a feature which allowed you to regain consciousness. I'd like it if your character could get back up if the hit hadn't been severe.

It's idiotic that a little poke from a club should knock you out, just because you have low health.

Oh noes! You touched our commander with a club and he fell down.

I'd expect that if the damage which put you out of action was very low (5 or less) then you'd be able to recover after a short time. The screen could be black until you recovered, but you could hear faint sounds of battle...

But I've gotten way off topic. Sorry 'bout that.

Yes; it is ridiculous that a small party of bandits is willing to fight an army of knights. (They do flee on the map, but shouldn't they try to get out of fighting before the battle too?)

It does.

Not like it used to.
I'm not too troubled, either
way. This actually saves the
player from having to face the
auto calc, after he falls.

I'd like to see this to the "Damn right. I am robbing you" option as well. I don't understand why they will fight to the death over 300 denars and some dried meat.

I would imagine a lot of this would have to do with classes, levels, and morale as well. But I'm not going to get into any of that. So, in general, I'd say 3 to 1 would be pushing it. If I were a commander, I wouldn't want to be fighting 3 people to me, and I'd know my men wouldn't want to either.
