Recruit
I have played a lot of Warrider now (i now have a Level 21 hero) and here are some comments and suggestions on the game:

Firstly, the graphics are really great! the animations of the soldiers on horses and such are of great quality.

Also, The battles in the game are its greatest high point. This is some of the most fun i've had in quite a while. The combat has a super 'realistic' quality to it, in the way horses and weapons handle and all that, and the huge battle arena's make it fun to ride around fighting on horseback.

Here are some suggestions for the game:

1: It doesnt feel nessecary for the game to go into 3rd person view upon entering a town. It would perhaps be better if upon entering a town there were just a set of buttons that said 'shop' or 'trainer' or 'see king' and so forth, and the player would just need to click these buttons to perform the various town functions. This would also mean that all the towns wouldnt have to be designed different, that would save a lot of time.

2: The idea of hiring soldiers doesnt really work right. I found that all my soldiers were quite useless and my character was all I needed to defeat the other party. Even when i managed to keep a group of men alive they would still just die after a while. and it was annoying to replace them. Perhaps if the player had a 'permanent' army this would be better. For example: Upon starting a new game the player starts with 10 peasants, and even if these peasants die they can still be healed back and keep their experiance. And then upon gaining more 'Leadership' skill the player is given another 3 or so permenant soldiers. This would mean that the player always has a permanent army to rely on that constantly gain experiance and can still be healed back after being killed, this would make the players army much more satisfying. Of course 'captured' soldiers will still stay the same. I think this might work better because at the moment hiring soldiers in the game is very annoying because they just die and you need to keep replacing them with different soldiers of different experiance.

3: It would be good if there were bigger armies in battles. I found that all the battles didnt last long enough and didnt have enough troops in them. It would be great if there were like 50 on 50 soldiers in the battlefield at once instead of enemy reinforcments coming in small groups constantly. This would make much longer and more fun and satisfying battles, because at the moment a lot of the battles seem too small which is a shame considering how huge and great looking the battlefields are.

4:It would be better if on the map screen the faction that a town belongs to was displayed next to the towns name instead of having to hover the mouse over a town to see what faction it belongs to.

5: It would be great if you could 'attack' a town of opposing faction in order to loot it for gold or some, and perhaps even lay seige to a enemy town. This would make the game feel like you in a world where the 2 factions really are battling each other (perhaps even winning the game could depend on destroying all of the either Swadian or Vaegir towns)

6: It would be great is you could see your character when you click on the inventory screen (there is plenty of space on the left of the screen to possibly do this.

Thats about all i can think of at the moment. This game is shaping up to be incredible, and the Fighting portion of the game is already absolutely brilliant with incredibly realistic fighting on foot and horsback. And all the different different weapons really make the combat more complex (like the difference between a bow or a crossbow) I look forward to the game progressing, it is great.

Hi Macaw,

Yes that was the way I did it originally (Kind of like Pirates!). Then I thought it would be much better to have actual towns. Of course at the time I didn't know the game would take such a monstrous amount of time!

The idea of hiring soldiers doesnt really work right....(snip) Perhaps if the player had a 'permanent' army this would be better.
I spent too much time on the current system and I would prefer to imrove it rather than replace it with something else. Maybe I should make soldiers upgrade more easily.

You're right. I need to install a system where player can change battle size. The main reason there aren't too many soldiers now is that it can bog down slower systems.

It would be great if you could 'attack' a town of opposing faction in order to loot it for gold or some, and perhaps even lay seige to a enemy town.
Again, originally it was my intention to have these along with ships and naval battles. Unfortunately I will have to leave them to Warrider 2

Hey! Thank you for your encouraging remarks. They really increased our "party morale" here  .

I will be very happy to hear if you think of any other suggestions.

Thanks for the info!

Some other suggestions I thought of:

1: Maybe near the end of development you could add in a 'free battle' mode of some sort that is accessed through the main menu or something that lets you set up a battle and you and your enemies army and your weapons and armor, then you battle. This could possibly also be used to test how many soldiers you can fit in a battlefield before the framerate gets too low, but apart from that a mode such as this would be a lot of fun to just have a quick battle.

2: Just a comment on equiment, do you plan to add in any more weapons or armors during development? Perhaps having morning stars or flails (any kind of Ball & Chain) as weapons would be fun  Apart from those the game seems to have almost every kind of medieval weapons available which is great

Also i'm just wondering, is there a certain time period your using as referance for all the weapons and armor? At the moment a lot of the weapons and armor remind me of the vikings.

Also i love the use of the Albrecht Dürer engraving as the background of the main menu

Yes that's a good idea, although I don't know if we will have enough time to add such features.

We want to add some more leather armor types and some more helmets. I would like to add flails but I would need to make changes to the animation system and the combat system for that and I'd rather use that time for polishing the use of existing weapons.

Thanks, it is nice to see that my passion for medieval weapons is shared by others .

Our most developed armor is from 15th century. We have got arms and armor from earlier periods as well but of course earlier equipment kept being used in later times. And yes we have got viking armors, helmets, swords, axes and shields  . The vaegirs are partly viking (like the early rus.)
