My point was you didn't have to be so blunt to Ulfr and could of reposted your previous links. Not everybody is as clued up as others and it's far better to have a teachers attitude and want to inform people instead of beating them down about it. People tend to see this as a game first and fore most over being 100% historically accurate and well a friendlier attitude goes a long way. If you had just stated and re-posted your old thread, which to be fare is quite a while ago, remarking on how aspects of his posted Gjermundbu helmet aren't correct then we wouldn't of had a problem and you would of taught somebody something new and made a friend in me.

Damn that's quite some scanning you did there. I actually took the Swords of the Viking Age book out from my library last year and it's pure pornography and should be banned. Always been partial to the Abingdon sword myself, oh how I want it. Do you have a particular favourite?

Though I do get sad when ever I look through books like this and see all the various, blades, pommels etc, for I always dream of the day when a game lets me make my own sword by sticking various types together.

Yes. But the problem is: Helmets without mail (or something) on it for the back of the head looks terrible.

If this problem could be fixed it would be really nice. Long hair + this Helmet (without mail on the back) = Epic look.

This is not the first time for Ulfr. And he have so my post there, but it didn't help him as i see. So i have no patience for him.

Bah, it looks more Celtic than I remember, but still, it looks gorgeous, even with the back of the head being bald for the wearer. Minus the decorations, those helmets are of similar shape. Not proposing for this one to be borrowed from Brytenwalda. Just saying a similar one would work in Vikingr.

Well you can because it would be a game. I'm not saying that I would customise my sword during the action like you would attach a scope to a gun rail, I'm not saying you would run around sticking this type blade onto a so and so hilt then take a fancy to this quillon I picked up off this chaps sword, remove it and plonk it on mine in real time or after a battle. No that is silly.

But in a persistent game which would allow me to customise my kit, it would represent me wandering down to the local blacksmith, dropping a bag of silver in his hand and saying "make this, like this". Blade, tang, pommel, hilt and all. In a game where you rank and grow wealthy and can then afford the nice more ornate work on your sword and commission shiny new blades. That is what I would like.

You missed the point.

This, frankly, is the problem. You don't explain. You don't list or link sources. You don't inform. You just write a few words and think that that is that. How, in your opinion, has Æthelwulf missed the point? Explain, talk, discuss, that's what a forum is for! If it's something covered in your thread then quote it and link it.

There isn't anything wrong with Æthelwulf's suggestion or line of thought. We have examples of weapons with blades made in one place and furniture placed on them elsewhere - such as the Wheeler's Type VI, Peterson Type Z found at Wandsworth. We also have finds of furniture found seperate from weapons, such as the rather lovely copper-alloy Saxon lower sword guard from Exeter. We know the people of the time were resourceful and recycled items or put them to new uses, especially with iron or metal items - iron was not cheap! It would not be beyond the skill of a smith to knock the rivets off of the furniture of one weapon with a broken/shattered/bent blade and put them on to a different blade, modifying them to fit if needs be. The important thing is we don't have enough finds to say this was never done and in the few we have there are examples of it having been done. When these sorts of sensible, practical and logical suggestions come up they should be matched to sources to see if there is a reasonable enough argument against it, and if there is an argument against it we have to prove it with primary sources, not the other way round.
