[Suggestion] Whats to keep you playing long term? Needs a hook...

I dont mean a large metal Captain Kidd type hook, i mean an addiction - just one more turn to level up type hook.

I know its not fair if people start the games with better stats, equipment etc, but playing the game for long periods and more importantly playing it well should give some kind of reward.

Ie maybe a title type ranking - starting at KNAVE or whatever and working up to LORD.

It also needs Stats. Stats stats and more stats.

Kills Deaths etc etc.

Game is great at the moment but what reason does anyone have to play it if they cant do some bragging or see how they rank against others?

Unlockable tabards and such would be great. I also want a big red message in everyone's screen that tells people that I have joined the match.

Maybe adding a SP-like leveling for game-types like Duel or Tournament (and I KNOW that they're going to be in a full game =D ) . And some sort of awards (like golden feathers or something) that you can win in tournaments. And addind deathmatch for own characters, where you can show your mastership with every weapon you like, and higher your rank is - better equipment you can buy.
And it could be great if high-ranked players will be able to upload and use their own banner.

Yes, like it or not - this kind of thing has become a standard in multiplayer games. Achievements, level ups, titles, tabards, anything can work. I'd really advise implementing a long-term reward before Warband is released.

Its a double-barreled question kind of. If id be playing the game for ages with success, i would like something to keep me playing. But then again, having something that would label me as hardcore or whatever, would just make me feel silly, since im human like all the rest, getting killed by newcomers when i wear full plate isnt really fun, cause after all, nobody is "better" then the other, just more skillful at the game.

So i'd like to fight as "newcomer" with a bare knife, instead of being slightly better and getting killed by newcomers, while i have godlike status.

Its hard to explain but you get my drift.

Wouldn't a lot of that just be amenable to abuse? You & your friend go hide on a lonely server, he kills you a hundred times, you kill him a hundred times, etc.

There would have to be a limitation on killing the same guy hundreds of times.
And sucking at the game would strip you of your rank pretty fast.

I think this type of stuff is lame.

I get satisfaction from playing the game and having a good time.
Not from playing the game and filling up some arbitrary experience bar to get some arbitrary title/rank/reward.

So you change your victim's game name, rinse and repeat.
There is a thing called an authentication key.

We're talking about long-term stuff here. I play for fun, too, but how long do you think random deathmatch will keep you interested?

Maybe.  But being permanently tied to your past forever doesn't sound very appealing.  Once you get good enough, you may want to 'rebuild' a character from scratch, etc.

Meh. Never thought it was interesting.  Always treated it as just a place to practice.

Of course, I didn't mean that you can only kill the guy once. I mean repeatedly killing him several times in a row.

Rewards like this will ALWAYS lead to exploiting and people only playing for the points, not a good idea IMO.

It needs to be countered with penalties that are x2 the stuff you had to do to get the rank.
Maybe even so much that lower ranks have almost no penalty, but failing at the ranks only a machine can achieve would drop you back to zero.

In a game such as Mount and Blade I think devolpers time could be better spent. Sure its a nice idea and does give a sence of a long term goal, but as already stated players always find a way to hack or break the system even in big budget games. I also think that these types of systems unless done really well actually cause more harm than good, players become controlled by it and never want to upset there overall score even if it means not doing whats best for the team.

Hear hear, seconded the original idea. My two cents:

  • We should need a list of stats hosted on the site. Kills, deaths, ratio, favourite server/map, battles won/lost, stuff like that, that most online multiplayer games have. It's a shame that I don't know what my stats are in the game, especially in the longterm. It would really add something into the game. But it shouldn't provide anything straight into the game, i.e. that you would get better armour or bonuses, there really isn't any need for these kinds of rewards. Just a simple experience ranking is good enough and I think that any experience related bonuses would really ruin the game.
  • Of course when the game is finally complete and released, I'm sure that official Clan battles will keep us entertained for years to come. I'm really looking forward to that. Can you imagine a well organized 32 vs. 32 Siege? Or a Battle, between two clans?

Up until they're ready to release Mount & Blade 2 I would expect.

Or until they find that there are other gamemodes in Warband.

I think this sort of thing is counter productive to enjoying the game. People turn into big enough jerks when they are anonymous without having a big flashing sign that says "hey look I've got more time to play video games therefore I'm better than you". I want to be able to log on for a team based bash for maybe an hour a week (or more depending on work) and NOT get someones big pulsating electronic penis shoved down my throat when I inevitably walk into the path of charging cavalry. The "LOL NOOBS" via text will be bad enough.
