to Khalid-

Normans WERE vikings. The French gave them Normandy so they would stop...like when you give a kid your Basketball just to go away.

Yes, I know. That's why it's funny to go picking on the names, since, at least in the 1066, there is another faction opposed them called the same thing.

If we're going to be particular about it, for the 1066 mod, they ought perhaps to just be called Danes then? Or will the Norwegian government sue Ben Hussey?

listen im gonna call them vikings and if anyone wants a fight fly over to New Zealand and ill beat seven kinds of **** out of you

I think it depends on what he's going for. If the 'raider' faction is going to appear only along the coast and will function as raiders - the term Viking is extremely apt. That's what the resident's probably would have called them, by and large.

If they're going to be a more settled group - it would make more sense that they're not longer 'raiders' ("Vikings") but a settled group - so they would be called Danes by that point. 'Course, that never really happened, so I think 'Viking' is the most historically appropriate name for them in the game.

(Edit, I was posting at the same time as Ben, apparently.)

Danes would work.

Or find the non-english version of the name.

On the other hand, the so-called "Anglo-Saxons" whom William the Conqueror defeated were, themselves, actually Danes.

So Normans (who are really Norseman) invade the Anglo-Saxons (who are really Norseman), while Vikings (who are really Norsemen) raid the coasts on the other side.

Thank God you've got a few Irish raiders who are at least non-Norse. Unless they came from the isles, in which case they are Norsemen too.

Bleh, in conclusion: it's all one big family squabble. Rename the mod: "1066: The Norse Civil War"

The name viking could come from several things.

To go in viking doesnt exactly mean to raid but rather to travel or be away from home.

Another possibility is that the word come from a place called Viken in Norway, viking meaning men from Viken.

Edit: The vikings/norse settled in Normandie where most likely from Norway.

Can't help to bug in for several reasons. Vikings were Norse people who left their homes to raid, colonize, and trade. So, as mentioned earlier in the thread, those who raided were in fact vikings (and Norse), while those who stayed home kept on just being farmers, blacksmiths, bakers (and Norse).

I have heard several suggestions for the origin of the name Viking. The specific location in Norway was a new one, the most common idea is that it comes from the word "vik", meaning bay, which is where they hid their ships.

The Vikings, or Norse, attacking at Stamford Bridge were Norweigan, under Harald Hardrada.

Having said that, I would also like to see a Viking mod. Or preferably a "Danelaw" mod or something similar, where you would have Anglo-Saxons vs Vikings (mostly Danes and Norweigans). Depending on when the mod is set, you could let the Norse be raiders, have standing armies, to being rulers of all England (Cnut). A 1066 mod is not a bad idea, but the number of battles between the death of Edward the Confessor and the battle of Hastings was very limited.

It's a widely popular thoery that the Norse vikings traveled to Iceland, Greenland, America, and England but not as much as the Danish vikings who (only) traveled to England as well, where they conquered a lot of land... But then again you can't really divide it up like this, because the borders were different back then, and they probably traveled together as vikings no matter what Scandinavian nationality they had...

A pretty good map showing Anglo Saxon England...

I would love to see a viking mod and have been thinking about trying some modding myself.

Is it possible to make ships?
