[Suggestion] This is not Steppe terrain

I fought a battle on the Khergit steppes and this is what I got:

notsteppeterrain.jpg

This does not look anything like steppe terrain.  Steppes should be flat.  And the small lumpy hills are totally unrealistic terrain.  BTW, I was not near mountains.

This is steppe type terrain:

Warband seems to have addressed this a little already, but random terrain generation still often gives crazy maps.  I know this has been suggested before in the past.  It needs to be fixed, however, as its still around.

Maybe spoiler the images? They're kinda HUEG. I agree, though; terrain generation is still wildly screwy. I'm hoping that's still in the works to be tweaked. They still have to fix the invisible and/or permastuck trees on random maps, so hopefully everything (including generation) will improve.

At least its not the knife-edge crap from 1.011, you know? But it still definitely feels like "hello, this is randomly generated terrain" rather than a naturally-occurring scene.

Spoilered.

Yes, the terrain is better than 1.011, but it still needs a lot of work.  I've played on several random maps that almost look like they were designed.  But many still have the small lumpy hills and a huge number of cliffs on what is supposed to be relatively flat land.

You said small lumpy hills were unrealistic, then posted an image with small lumpy hills

But yeah, steppes should be flat.

I did not post a picture of a small lumpy hill.  Steppes have some rises and such, but they aren't 50ft wide circles that go up 20 ft in the air and back down again as suddenly.  Hills are big and have gentle slopes (for the most part; I'm not talking about mountains and stuff).

So most agree that there can be hills, except that they should not be that steep and look like they are geographically impossible? I really hope the steppe generator does not turn out a lot of flat dry pancakes.

Jokes aside, my experience with steppes lead me to think that there can be a lot of hills, just not ridiculous hills that look unnatural or manmade. The bad terrain generator examples have hills that look like there were carved out, since erosion would definately have made them a lot smoother. Steppes can also be almost as flat as a golf course, so all must depend on the luck of the draw.

It would be nice to see some better algorithms for the random map generation. There are plenty of examples which show that it is possible to get good looking terrain from them. Just look at what InfinityAdmin has done for Infinity the Quest for Earth (http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_zoom&Itemid=90&catid=4), and he doesnt have the choice of doing multiple passes/erosion with his either because of the nature of the procedural generation hes using.
