[Suggestion] Tell us what weapon we have.

So for the most part, this isn't a big problem, but oft times I'm sitting there wondering 'what am I holding?'

It's especially a big problem with lances and other spear weapons because they all look the same.  Some, like the Awlpike or Pike are obvious because they either put away your shield with equipping or are so long it's obvious.  But between the light lance, lance, and heavy lance, there's no way to tell other than the heavy lance's shaft is slllllliiightly darker than the rest. 

Only way to tell is drop it on the ground and then pick it up again, but that seems...unnecessary.  So can we get a brief blurb down near our health bar (under the weapon icon) that tells us exactly which weapon we're carrying? 



Similarly it's impossible to distinguish the icon of a short sword, sword, arming sword, arming short sword, etc.

However for newer players, and when you choose 2 different lengthened spears.
Even though the tips of the spears are different , a more prominent difference is in order, in the 2d images .

Problem is, you don't.  If you can't afford the weapon you selected, it gives you one that's further down the tree that you can afford.  So if I pick a Heavy lance and have light and regular as options, yet can't afford the heavy, it gives me the next one I can afford.  If I can't afford a heavy nor regular, it gives me light.

So I'm left guessing exactly which lance I have and what timing I need to do to account for the speed and length differences.
 
I agree sometimes i wonder if i have been given a short sword, though i meticulously make sure i have what i ordered, this is not ideal.
 
Agreed. Sometimes you pick up an improved weapon and can't figure out which one you should drop. I've always had to drop them to figure out which is which.
 
Yeah, for all the reasons listed above I've always wondered why this was never in the game. Certain weapons that look almost identical behave entirely differently, and I shouldn't have to put away my shield and swing to tell if I accidentally picked up an arming sword instead of a bastard sword. Or try and guess whether I got a spear or a war spear if I didn't have enough cash.

The code to do this is pretty simple. When I was running tests for my mod I wrote a script just like this, and the amount of code required to display every piece of equipment you have is very small and simple.
 
Perhaps we don't even need something that stays on the screen permanently?  As soon as you switch a weapon text could appear on the screen somewhere innocuous and slowly fade, alerting the user to what weapon they're currently holding without cluttering up the display.
 
Why not have it appear when you press tab to check scores?  Keeps it out of the was and stops it cluttering things up while still being readily accessible.  I've never felt it necessary but its certainly not something I'd object to so long as it was unobtrusive.
 
Along the same lines as this, I would like the kill messages to be slightly more detailed as well. I would like to know if someone is killing people with a bastard sword or heavy bastard sword sometimes. I know it is not the most important, but it would be nice to see exactly what other players are using in the game.
