Yes, but only if the reach of the 2h mode could somehow be simulated in a better way, either by changing the 2h grip or stats ( NightNinja's suggestion to decrease the speed while in 2h mode is a great solution ! ), changing the swing animations or improving on the polearm grip by making the character hold further down the shaft.

As it is now it works very well if you use both modes ( and don't exploit the 2h mode ); polearm mode as general fighting stance, and 2h mode only for a few attacks here and there, mostly, but not only, against cavalry - but also to surprise the enemy with the full reach of the weapon, or when smashing his shield while staying out of reach. Trouble is, of course, that most people do exploit it.

On a side note, it is great to see so many use the polearm mode now after it became the default grip, as - even though it can still easily be changed back to 2h mode - many new people do not seem to be aware of this, and hopefully they will get used to the polearm grip before they do. That, or they believe poleaxing must be best as it is the default mode.

My main gripe with the polearm setting is that it then stabs, and it doesn't at all look like the sort of weapon a warrior should stab with!

In regards to both realism and game-balance I also think that would be the optimal solution, Seawied86.

The weapon was/is used that way - contrary to what most would believe - and with all respect FrisianDude, but just because someone doesn't know something about a piece of medieval weaponry doesn't mean weapons shouldn't be properly portrayed in the game.

This, or make 2h-grip overhead only.

btw. all pole-weapons (2h axes, clown-hammers, bardiches, hedgehog, ect) should use polearm grip (or special grip for short unbalanced polearms, but still no current 2h grip)

It would have to be a different two-handed grip.  The shortest two-handed axe would be down to 65 reach using the polearm animation.

which wouldn't be bad. Compared to swords they would trade speed and reach for damage, anti-shield bonus and low price.

I'm not sure if I would ever pick a 2h axe if it had the reach of 65. The damage trade off just wouldn't be worth it

Its not only that anyone would ever use it or not.  It would look flat out retarded to see people wielding short axes from the middle like that.  More retarded than the two-handed animations certainly.  We have been asking for the polearm animation to have your character use it from the butt of the haft for a while now.  Once that happens nothing is stopping axes from using the polearm animation.  It just looks dumb currently.

You're right; it would probably be used to stab. Not very often, though and probably a bit more energetic than the polearm-stab is at the moment.

That's why 2h axe (and maybe hammers or whatever) should stay switchable, but not be able to block in 2h mode.

Balanced and versatile.

That is an excellent idea, blocking should indeed be impossible with the 2h grip, if it is to be kept at all, that is.

With the length of the Long axes, is it even possible to physically wield them the way they are in 2h mode?

Very much agreed. Holding my Fiskars splitting axe like that feels rather cumbersome, and I certainly can't see myself swinging it around with a baseball bat grip. If I want to hit right in the middle of a log accurately, I raise the thing holding it with a "polearm grip" and slide my hand down while I'm bringing it down. Here's the axe. Granted, I'm not a trained martial artist and that thing isn't made with melee combat first in mind, but I'm primarily attempting to give some idea of how the size of the long axe combined with the 2h grip is very silly.
