Suggestion: Screw the Search Button

That's right, I'm tired of idiots telling newbies and occasionaly other idiots to use the search button.

The Search function works effectively in exactly TWO circumstances: when you have a very unusual word as your topic (eg: "charriots" or "elephants" or "bagpipes" or "rondache") -words that do not come up in general conversation- OR when you have already read a topic once and remember certain unusual words to search for.

Searching for "horse" "upgrade" "combo" "jumping" or "greatsword" in any combination, or any of the other recently bashed topics yealds bountiful results! Too bountiful. In fact, they yeald virtually the entire contents of the suggestion forum.

Now, posting the frequent suggestions thread (like Lost-Lamb so often does) is useful. That sticky was a great, helpful idea.
But the search function sucks ass. And (ha ha) anyone who actually bothered using it would KNOW that.

"Try using the search button" is a suggestion I never want to hear again.

And if I've offended members of this forum who have made this suggestion in the past... Good. That was my intention. Too many have already displayed the social graces of a common seven year old brat. Perhaps if they are offended now, I won't need to offend them again. Grow manners and get a clue, children.

True. With patience and smart use of keywords you can often find what you're looking for pretty quickly, but it usually takes some patience and your average forum n00b is sadly lacking in that respect. After most searches it takes a lot of weeding to find what you're looking for, as I noticed while putting together the Frequent suggestions and links thread. However, now that we have the ***Frequent Suggestion Answering Form.***, you guys can actually try being helpful and quote that instead of whining about the search engine and acting like dicks.

Destichado, It's just our way of saying '**** off, you can't say anything that hasn't been said before'.

As if I didn't know that.

If you don't have anything better to say, shove it.

I am REALLY pissed off by the arrogance I see here directed towards new members. No one gives a flying leap what your post count is, or how long you've been a member, or how many discussions you've been in. Saying "shut up, you're new" is only another way of saying "I'm an insecure 13-year old virgin who doesn't have anything better to do".
GROW UP. And let this community grow, without turning into disgusting cesspool like all of Blizard's gamesites have.

Thankyou Destichado, my thougts exactly! There are faaaar to many regulars who are turning this forum into something that resembles the counterstrike community *cough cough* Worbah *cough cough*, not to name names... The search button sucks horribly, and if you are new to the forums, you're not going to recall old posts and therefore the search button becomes even more worthless. As i've stated before, this game is spread largely by word of mouth, and when you insult new forum members for whatever reason (unless they're asking for a free key) you should be BANNED!!! Not only are you making yourself out to be an ass, but you are degrading the quality of the community and driving people away, thereby costing armagan money. If someone asks a question that has been posted a dozen times before, answer it, welcome them to the forums, then politely refer them to a sticky or related post.

To be frank, if a user is too stupid (and that's exactly what punching in a one word query with a common word is - stupid) or impatient to both read the stickies and learn how to manipulate the searches to find what they want, then they deserve everything they have coming to them.

The search button works fine if you take the time to refine your query.

This coming from a new member.

I agree, man. If someone makes a repeated suggestion just ignore it or warn the poster in a polite manner ("Good suggestion, but it has already been suggested. Check the Frequent suggestions and links thread").

Just as worst are the assholes who:

- flame people who post "I love this game" threads out of the official thread. I dont think there should be an official thread for that anyway, simply becouse nobody reads that goddamn huge thread. When someone is so happy about finding "M&B" that feels the need of posting a topic about it, I cant think of anything more brutal and stupid than flamming the person for it. Is the worst thing we can do to help spreading the word about "M&B".

- flame people for asking "When the next version will be released?". We all know that asking that over and over again will not make the next version be released any sooner, but this is the question most of us are asking ourselves everyday when we come here. People asking about it are not trying to disrespect Armagan, they just love this game and are anxious about the next version, as we all are. And if Armagan dont seen to bother about it (he never posted anything like: "Please, stop asking for the next version"), why should we?

These forums should be friendly, inviting, helpful, interesting, and fun to new comers. Why? Two main reasons: First, it is just the right thing to do. Second and more importantly, if these forums aren't those things then it hurts the forum's (hence the game's) image.

Remember that the main reasons for this forum are so that new people can get more detailed information on the game (before or after they purchase it) and so that everyone has a common place to share ideas, discuss the game, and just generally 'hang out' and have a good time.

Try and keep in mind that this forum represents a business. It has a very relaxed atmosphere, which is great, but it is still representing a business. Have the common courtesy to treat it as such.

While I agree that flaming newcomers is wrong ... it is just as wrong to create a flame thread directed at the original flamers. Put fire out with water ... not more flames. If you think it has gotten that bad ... pm a moderator/admin or even Armagan himself. Try and solve the problem rather than make it worse.

Just my thoughts,
Narcissus

It was a joke. The reason why I am blunt to newcomers is that most of them just write the same 'Hi! I haven't even glanced at the rules or the other stickies. I just want to say that I like the game. That's all'.

Destichado, should you have observed my 'flaming', you would have noticed that it was directed at those who had nothing else to say than the usual line. If you have a question, I will answer it. If you want to raise a point rarely discussed, I will discuss it. But if you are just stating the obvious, I will write a few aggressive posts. After that I'm civil to you. Think of it as an initiation.

PS: If I have hurt your feelings. Just say so. I'm sorry if you can't sleep over some comment I made.

flame me if you want for the comment but... has no one else notice just really how much people complain on this forum? I mean... god dammit theres more whining here than Britney Spears in bed

And now we have someone to complain about complaining. Whats worst than whining? Whining about other people whining.

But if you are just stating the obvious, I will write a few aggressive posts. After that I'm civil to you. Think of it as an initiation.

Maybe you should find something better to do with your free time. No one cares about your "initiations".

Khalid, I am very likely one of the most civil people on this forum. I would not wish to offend you, but I believe you lack perspective. When you reach a point in your studies and see as much staggering ignorance as I do every day, we'll talk again.
That said, civility is useless against the uncivil. There is a time and a place for profanity and bluntness, sir, and this is it.

This behavior and the attitude that goes along with it are unnacceptable. They denote ignorance, childishness, insecurity and tastelessness. And it will never change unless some ******* stands up and makes a HELL of a stink about it.
That ******* is me, gentlemen. Allow me to introduce you to a pain in the ass. I am an equal opprotunity offender and I'll play no favorites.
Revise your behavior or prepare to be pissed off.

Have a nice day.

Look, I haven't 'flamed' newbies for a month or so. Why are you bringing this up now?

And back on topic: I think that the search button should be used if you think that whatever you are about to write could have been said before. Sure, it doesn't work in some cases. But then there's the common question/suggestion list often posted.

I'm tired, I'm going to go to bed. I promise I'll check this thread again at 16:00 or so. Untill then, goodnight.

EDIT: Corrected some typos. Like I said, I'm tired.

haven't you ever heard of a controlled burn? Fighting fire with fire works well, as long as you control who does the burning.

Sorry for the quoting thing. I felt the need to iterate my point.

@Destichado: I guess I deserved that. I used an analogy and hence so did you ...

The point I was trying to make is this: Rather than make the problem worse by doing a thing that is very similar ... take action by contacting someone that can fix the problem. But you knew that. Didn't you? You are a bad, bad person.
