Bump: I'd like a custom heraldry system where you can choose your symbols and colors, rather than a pre-determined list of existing banner. The basic mechanisms for it already exist in the game files, and I think it'd add a lot to the game if it were activated and completed.

I doubt they could get the first 2 without proper licensing from Saul Zaentz & New Line Cinema. You can ask PJ how that **** went down.

This idea is plain awesome, it supports my lazyness with an ingame editor. I LOLLED when you said "Tits on your shield", even though I dont really know why its funny.

I think this is a great idea although clan banners would be a problem. maybe have a system where only clans can submit totally custom images. it would be a lot easier to check.

Also, to those worried about ID, it's no different to our current situation really. most people don't use the faction banner at the moment so how would this be worse?

Having said that i don't like the current system ( i have the faction circles turned off, i don't know if they stay no matter what the person is using though). There are quite a few options to fix it and keep the custom banners though. you could have it as a client option, have it like mute so you can select who has a custom banner and who has default, you could also have it so that only the top 5 people or so on each team have custom showing. I don't see how modifying the custom banner to make it easier to see teams would help though; it would just make them look ugly.

I don't have too much trouble telling people apart usually at the moment though due to weapon/armour differences; it's only a problem if they're going naked.

Actually Phallic symbols are very historical. Maybe not on coats of arms, but on pendants and brooches and stuff (not to mention codpieces? come on!)

I have a nice pin to fasten to my medieval clothing, which is a pair of breeches and Mail hose (chauces) hanging from a chain, with a Penis sticking out from the breeches, and being crowned by two women (who, incidentally, are also inside the breeches). It's historical from like, the 14th century, and is pretty much valdi for M&B period as well.

just saying

btw, I want option 1, and the similarity can be easily fixed by having various different charges available. If you find an enemy wearing your own coat of arms, it's your duty to kick his arse, which is fairly historical, I should think.

I like the idea. I always wanted to be able to use my family shield in a game... Which is why I like the idea of custom graphics. I suppose, although more complex, two separate systems could be implemented for single player and multiplayer... for those who feel the urge to destroy Caladria with two heavy barmaid bosoms while maintaining online simplicity.

In the period of M&B, your family heraldry would have been simplified (take away the supporters, the crown on the top... the big feathers, and strip it to the basics...) a heatershield, with a background, a charge, and some other stuff... that's pretty simple... if you put in a whole bunch of charges, let you stick them on, a whole bunch of customizable backgrounds, and allow you to pick the colour scheme of "metal-colour-metal", there's plenty of variation for everyone.

My agreeance lies here!

"1"

Preset Background, Pattern, Symbol, and colors for each.

There will be plenty of combinations and very little same banners. In any case chance of having the same banner will be much smaller.
Possibility of abuse next to zero.

Very historical BUT as an object of worship. Not an object that 12yr old kids use to ridicule and 'have fun' and annoy others with 'look how kewl I am, pen** pen** pen** teeheehee".

Historical phallus had air of solemnity around it, and/or devotion, and not air of immaturity and shallowness. And guess how many people who would take it would not be immature kids... mmm none.

In other words, best to just avoid something that will cause nothing but problems and be distasteful.

An in game heraldry creator would be awesome.  There would be little room for abuse if you used the historical rules of heraldry for the devices, fields, borders etc.

I picked option 2 as I think a lot of people would still like to import their own images.

One way to allow player input might be to have a heraldry submission section on the website/forum. Have a section for each area on the shield eg: device, field, borders/divisions etc. Then have a down loadable template image for people to put their suggestion on for each one.

Ideally these would be small enough that you could flick through them pretty quickly.

Then whenever a new patch comes out you just chuck in the best of the heraldry suggestions.

freedom at the risk of abuse.

if you see someone with an offensive banner it just makes it easier to avoid them.
if they are on your team they will get you killed or just annoy the hell out of you. it is good to know where they are.

or you could just vote kick them or get in touch with whoever runs the server and send them a screenshot and get them banned from the server.
