Knight at Arms
I've really enjoyed the Warband beta; It's easily got the best Game-play out of anything I've ever tried, especially for a multiplayer game. For a new release though, it lacks a lot of the graphical features that most gamers are used to seeing; Warband is a definite improvement on Vanilla, but it still has some ways to go. I'm not asking for huge textural overhauls or anything overly drastic, as it looks good in most ways already, but i think it could be improved by the use of particle systems and the like. I'd personally love to see:
  • Impact effects between weapons
  • Impact effects with the environment (A puff of dirt, wood chips, etc)
  • Scratches on Walls/ armor/ flesh? after Weapon impacts
  • Splashes when falling into water, (this would make for some cool ragdolls)

This isn't as urgent as weapon balance or weapon sweetspots, but nonetheless i would love to see some of this implemented.

Edit: Grammar mistakes and sparks

What graphics detail do you use? As far as I know you get water splashes in water now. Also impact effects are in some places at least for arrows. I agree all except with the sparks with the swords, that just screams like a bad b-fantasy flick

I run everything on Highest, and after some playing around with ragdolls off of bridges, i didn't notice any splashes. And yeah i do realise that smacking pieces of steel together doesn't produce sparks.  However, some impact effect would be nice.

Of course you could hit 2 swords together to make sparks I'd imagine but a real warrior blocks/parries with minimum possible damage to the weapon. Therefore that's bit unrealistc. Also I haven't seen splashes when something falls to water. I was thinking about when you walk in water. It would be great to get splashes when your arrows/axes etc. land in water.

Animaaations...

Fixed

I'd rather have working system than pretty system. And if you want sparking swords try out star wars.

Noted, but is that really an argument against the suggestion? Of course balance and such are more important, but I think people want some flashy stuff to go with their game play experience. A working system that looks great is better than one that works the same, but looks mediocre.

Regarding sparks, perhaps they could appear rarely if you block a particularly strong attack (and not with a wooden handle or something). I fence, and you do occasionally see sparks. It's pretty awesome.

Sounds good to me

would I like to see this implemented? Sure! Do I expect it/be disappointed in the least if this doesn't get added? Nope!

I think we may be surprised with the final release of Warband. I remember when the final release for vanilla came out, they added a HUGE amount of new textures and features (shiney armour!).

Indeed, I think the stage for graphical improvements has somewhat passed too, I imagine they were added at the very beginning of Warband as part of engine upgrades. Remember this is Direct X 9 at best and "puffs of dirt" etc are something that are only standard in Direct X 10+ games.

Ha, I remember posting a (retrospectively) silly thread asking why the devs didn't use an unreal engine, or, (oh how embarrasing) the crysis engine...

That said, there is news (i think on RPS) that some developers will be making their engines available for free in the future?
