I know that you can currently map three modes to your attack types: [Mouse Direction], [Inverted Mouse Direction], or [Movement Direction].
I would like to suggest a further option: Assign a Key to attack/block mode.
Essentially there are 4 types of attacks and 4 types of blocks: Overhead, Right, Left, and Thrust.
We all know what the current available operate like...
Mouse Direction - You turn the mouse right, you attack from the right.
Inverted Mouse Direction - You turn the mouse left, you attack from the right.
Movement Direction - You walk to the right for a moment, you attack from the right.
My suggestion would be to allow one to map keys/mouse buttons to attack types. For instance instead of [Mouse button + Look right] to attack from the right, you can map the right mouse button to Right attack, the left mouse button to Left Attack, etc. For instance I've got a mouse with 6 buttons so I could do something like this...
"Left mouse is left attack, right mouse is right attack, mouse button 3 is overhead attack, mouse button 4 is left block, mouse button 5 is right block, mouse button 6 is overhead block, and v key is thrust block." Or whatever idea might please a specific player.
I know that, personally, one of my major issues is that I like swing-damage items - it's why I liked the bardiche and falchion in M&B 1 and why I like the Menavlion/Long Glaive and Bill in M&B 2. But stuff like the Glaive - really good swing attack, but abysmal thrust attack. In very limited situations would I ever want to use the thrust attack - but if I don't look to the side far enough when I'm riding down an enemy horseman, I'll thrust at him, instead of winding back a full swing. Then I risk missing an attack opportunity because I either have to throw the useless thrust, or feint out of it and get the correct attack winding up. So being able to totally disable my thrusting, or assign it to an out-of-the-way key or something would be a huge boon to my sanity.
I also believe that this feature would open the game to more disabled players. There are people out there that can't react quickly enough with their whole arm/hand, but can assign buttons to their pleasure. I know, once again personally - as someone who has logged 177 hours into the game so far, it would be a boon for addicted sods like myself. Sometimes constant large battles will put a real strain on my wrist from having to do this minute twists to get the right attack - but with a button press I could just tap away and only ruin my finger joints instead of my whole wrist joint (haha).
The ability to do attacks and blocks separately would also be good. So for instance you could assign the mouse buttons to attacks, as I mentioned in my above example, but still leave blocking as per mouse direction (that would be my preferred example) or vice versa, or whoever.
