Hi.
I recently got a new laptop, and installed Warband. It's been working fine for a few days, then yesterday, I joined a server and noticed that my ping was over 600 and I kept dropping out. When I looked at the server list, I saw that only about one or two had 2 digit pings, while half the rest had pings of almost 1000, and the others closer to 2000. When I joined one with a sensible ping indicated in the server list, it was nevertheless around the same high level immediately after I joined. I thought at the time this was due to a poor internet connection at the router or something, since my laptop was telling me I had an excellent connection to our network (though it's worth pointing out that I'm hardly clued in with all this, if that isn't already evident), so I left it and decided to come back today. Unfortunately, the problem still exists, and so I believe it may be something more permanent.
I'm not sure if this is related or not, but on the day the problem occurred, I changed Steam's download region to New York, (before that, it was London). This was just to see if many more servers appeared in Empire: Total War. When I saw the answer was no, I changed the download region back to London, and now, everything in Steam is just as it was before. Unfortunately, I can't remember if I tampered with this before or after I discovered the problem with Warband.
I am aware that internet settings and firewalls and the like can cause problems with multiplayer connections. However, I don't see how this can be the issue here, as I definitely did not tamper with anything to do with this between the last time I played with normal ping and yesterday evening when I discovered the problem. I also checked the Firewall settings just now and Warband is set to 'allow'. Furthermore, the Firewall is set to notify me if it attempts to block a program. The fact that I changed nothing between the times of normal ping and colossal ping, (ignoring the setting in Steam, which was immediately reset to its initial setting) is quite frustrating, and I wonder if anybody much more clued in with this than I might be able to help.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and a happy Easter to all,
Inukshuk
