Successful Irish Game

So while in the past I have found it annoying that the Irish seem to always get conquered by the English in this mod, I have found that that is not always the case. It is essentially a matter of luck, but if the Irish take the Isle of Mann first, and the player personally goes after Norwegian armies and then continues to support them after, Ireland can have success.

Most importantly, do not start out Irish. Offer your services as a mercenary. After they take Mann (whether you help them or not), save first, then offer King Brian O'Neill your sword in vassalage. I got Mann Hamlet as a fief, which provided me with the much tougher Norse troops rather than the much weaker Gaelic troops. Gaelic troops come in handy later, just not right now.

So after raising an army and kicking some Norse butt, O'Neill declared war on the Scots. After I had many decisive battles against their forces, the Irish were able to make progress against the Scots, conquering Stirling on their own without my help. The English the went to war with the Scots and took Glasgow, and the Irish and English proceeded to divide and conquer Scotland. After building my own castle, I went after Edinburgh Castle. It is important to do this so you can get professional European troops (Miles and the like).

After Scotland was conquered, O'Neill declared war on the English and proceeded to take Wexford Castle and later all of Wales. I personally assaulted Dublin three times without help, taking it the final time, though before I did this, I had to take on the entire English army alone. This was accomplished by hiring two huge armies from my manor and letting them engage the English. I joined the battle and we were outnumbered 2 to 1, so I fought as hard as I could to kill as many of them as possible. Ultimately neither side won (I was so wounded I had to order my troops to attack without me eventually), but the English army was more or less destroyed, while the Irish army was completely intact except for my own forces. I proceeded to mop up what English lords I could (auto - resolve causes heavy casualties on both sides, I only used it since I wasn't given a choice). Then I simply went back to my castles, restocked my army with fresh troops, and hired a new army from my manor, and proceeded to take Dublin, the purpose of the accompanying army to scare off or destroy any of the now weak English armies that came near.

Anyways, Ireland is now fully freed from English tyranny, has Wales entirely under its control, and now most of Scotland. This has been a very fun, rare playthrough. I am thoroughly enjoying it. I realize my success is largely due to luck, but I thought I would share my strategy on how to be successful with Ireland.

As for how to pay for all of it... personally I imported my character. However, it is very easy to make tons of money in this game with a new character. As long as you have a horse, you can practically win any one on one tournament. Just ten tournaments and you'll have over 100K. After you have your own manor, build everything, and make some of your peasants pay you in goods. I do oil, tools, hides, linen, wool cloth, fruit, wine, and ale. Between the occasional tournament and selling these goods, you can pay for anything in this game. Ah, you should also buy enterprises in as many cities as possible. Remember dye works is not always the most profitable.

Ah, also, keep auto-garrison off, and stock your castles and cities with 1000 troops each. It costs a buttload, but the AI will leave it alone. Right now I'm losing over 40k a week. But if you can make the money, it is well worth it.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed my overview on how to play as an Irishman. Happy Sasanach hunting!

Thanks!

Yeah, the English did start pushing back hard. They took back Abberfraw and captured most of our lords. And then to my frustration I couldn't free the lords since Clare Castle has no dungeon entrance! So I laid siege to it (I am now marshal), and the entire English army came. Luckily, most of our new Spanish lords had followed me (sadly, the Moors conquered all of Castille). They outnumbered us 2 to 1 (1200 to our 600), but we kicked their Sasanach butts. Unfortunately,  the game glitched and wouldn't let the battle end, so it wouldn't give me any of the renown or morale bonuses. This has happened to me quite a few times now. So that is where I am right now. I will reload the save and kick their butts again next time I play.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad to have rekindled your interest in the mod.

So I tried fighting the English army again, and defeated them three times in a row, but then I was too wounded to fight (I got taken down in the third battle). And then the auto-resolve had them win even though we outnumbered them at that point. I swear, this mod has the worst auto-resolve. It should let us play as a subcommander (one of the companions), or give us just enough health to keep fighting. Staying out of the fight just so you can continue to personally command your troops takes the fun out of the game. But that's what I will have do. *sighs* This is what I get for playing on normal damage.

Yes, that would be awesome if you could play as your companion or regular soldier (the same way you can after you are knocked out in battle). I tend to avoid auto-battle aswell, because there is no real logic in this feature (it isn't always against you - sometimes it gives undiserved victories aswell but there is no fun in that) prefering restarting from last save.

Call me crazy but I distinctly remember there being a feature where you could play as your soldiers the second you died. In fact I'm sure of it, because I spent an hour fighting a 1000 vs 1000 battle in spain once and died several times.

Oh yeah, it lets you play as a soldier when you die within the same battle. But that doesn't help you for the next battle. I'm saying it would be nice if there was a change commander feature or if they automatically gave you enough health to fight like in some other mods. That said, 1000 v 1000 you say? Maybe there is some way for me to turn up the reinforcement waves during a battle so I can fight it all at once rather than as a series of battles.

EDIT: Okay, there was. It was set to 3 waves, so I changed it to 100. In the end, the English still won, but far more of them died than us (over 800 of them died, just over 400 of us were killed or wounded). I left the battle just before the end so I wouldn't be taken prisoner. We still have a standing army and so do they, but now theirs is a lot less to fight (only 800 now as opposed to 1600). I just have to make sure my remaining forces don't get captured on the way up to Edinburgh.

Set the reinforcement waves to 3 in the mod options.... And for C****t sake keep some health for the end of a battle....

Alright, I was able to to take Clare Castle and free my comrades after refilling my forces. I just now killed another 800 English by Aberffraw. I wanted to retake it, but the English came to stop me as always. I hope the war ends soon. Both sides are losing at this point! Lol

Get out before they beat your ass! Your lords are probably running out of money and you'll reach that awful stage when they're fielding fodder and tiny fruitfly armies. Beg the king for peace or deliberately concede a few cities you know it'll be easy to take back (more likely to get peace). England will probably get occupied by another war during the truce so make the most of it and tourney the living daylights out of europe.

I agree with you, but is there a way to get your own king to make peace with another king? I'm not independent. And yeah, at this point I really can't do much since auto resolve takes your troops down to 0 much of the time. And I did succeed in what I set out to do. It is time for this war to end if possible. I'll end the campaign as soon as I get my lords to safety. That said, all the English have managed to regain is Aberffraw and Pembroke Castle, and I don't care if they retake Clare Castle. But I really don't see what I can do to end the war. The most I can do is give my lords a breather.

EDIT: Hahaha, I just found out I'm using the wrong version. So a piece of advice to other newbies who might read this wanting to use the latest SVN version rather than the latest download version. Make absolutely sure you download the anno1257 version and NOT the dev1257 version. Anyways, that probably means the end of this semi-AAR. We shall see if I can get as lucky again once I get the latest version. I can still import my character, so no loss there! If I do get lucky again, I will do a proper AAR.

EDIT2: Argh! Right when I find out I have the wrong version, I find a Masterwork XIIIA Sword. *sighs* Well, hopefully I find one sooner rather than later in the latest version. It costs 174501 denars, but it would be worth every coin.

Just one last piece of advice before I stop posting in this thread. After I retreated from Aberffraw and let my lords recover, the English made their predictable next move, laying siege to Clare Castle to retake it. Since the only reason I took it was to free the lords within, it did not matter to me if they captured it. However, this was the time to seize the opportunity to take Glasgow. I called my lords back on campaign, and because so many had been freed from Clare Castle, there were more than enough troops to take Glasgow with minimal losses. So now we are essentially the Kingdom of Ireland and Scotland, while the English are the Kingdom of England and Wales, though the Welsh are still surviving in Lancaster Castle which they took from the English early in the game. So while I have not united the Brythonic Celts (Welsh, Cornish, and Bretons) under our banner, I have succeeded in uniting all Gaels (Irish, Scottish, and Manx) under one banner. And that is a beautiful thing. I would post a screenshot it I could.

Anyways, it's been fun. I don't think my PC Internet will work for a while, so I will have to work on the proper AAR offline for the time being. But expect something around Christmas or February, I would say, though by then we might all be playing Doc Thomas's final final version.

EDIT: Ah, and the advice is essentially siege your enemies towns and fortresses while they siege yours. Trading a fortress for a town almost always means gain. At this point, we have 5 cities to the enemy's 5. Ireland has suddenly become an even match for the English.
