What I have:
an army that's half infantry (footmen and archers) and half cavalry.

I put infantry 20 paces in front of archers and cavarly and then I run with my horse towards the approaching enemy, circle around cavalry, approaching infatry lines, giving a couple of hits and throwing a few down with my horse. When I have half of their army on my tale and they are nicely spread over while my soldiers are formed together, I order a charge. Since many of their soldiers are chasing me and not putting up a fight against my troops I can win a larger army.

Downside: It's not that rare for me to drop unconsious from ranged attacks or when I close in to join the battle.
 
I usually play with a single unit type army: either they're all cavalry, infantry or archers.

With cavalry I always just charge head-on. No reason for tactics here. If, however, I have cavalry in addition to other unit types, I will make my infantry/archers hold ground while I try to take my cavalry to the enemy's flank. At the moment infantry comes within striking distance I will charge with my cavalry from behind, striking the enemy from both sides. Very effective against all types of infantry. If the enemy happens to have loads of mounted units the battle just becomes a big deadly game of tag.

With infantry I usually just hold ground or have them slowly follow me. This is in order to keep my men as close together as possible, giving my troops superior defensive and offensive capabilities.

Same thing with archers, expect with them I never advance. Instead I try to find an elevated spot with a clear line to advancing enemy troops and have them hold that position (and perhaps even spread out a little). If I happen to have some infantry in addition to my archers, I will have them group a short distance in front of them where they will hold the enemy long enough for my ranged units to shread them into pieces. Works beautifully against large parties of Bear warriors.
 
Arm: Everyone I can get.

I begin the battle like this and make the rest up as I go along.

Cavalry: Charge.
Infantry & Archers: Hold position.
Archers: Pull back
Infantry: Advance
Cavalry: Follow me (If I am on horseback)
 
I don't have a horse. Basically I run towards the enemy and kill a few and then give the charge order and win. If the enemy has a lot of people with hammers I might let my soldiers charge at the same time as me. But swords and such can't harm me. Or bows for that matter. I have a tincan soldier :wink:
 
I expect that will change in the future versions of the game... in EGII the good armor:
1. wasn't that good.
2. either had strength requirements that would make it anavailable for players less than 30+ level or was insanely expensive.
 
I use Swadian troops, 2 Knight: 4 Shock Troopers: 15 Soldiers.

I use a strength/charisma based character with high charisma and leadership, and I cranked up troops from leadership to twice as much as originally. Then I built up a lot of renown. Then I went recruiting and used some companions to train the recruits up, so I have about 600 soldiers, 160 shock troopers, and 80 knights sitting in my fiefs. I roll them out when I need to go to war and basically order a charge by my infantry, sit around for a while, then order my knights to charge, and sit around some more. Then I hit tab and go to the next battle.
 
Well, the upkeep on those units is horrendous. Plus the morale is atrocious. So I keep them garrisoning my fiefs alongside the normal garrisons.
 
I'm lost here. You can put troops in castles. You still have to pay them, but not feed & keep morale, ok. Now, what do you mean by fiefs alongside the normal garrisons?
 
I keep a steady garrison in my fiefs, and I toss the soldiers in the fiefs when I'm not at war. So, during war, I have like 200 troops in my garrisons, at peace, I have like 500. And the payment is halved if they're garrisoned, and not marching with you.
