Straight away going freelancer? +Other starter questions eg starting companions

Hi all,

I'm going to be starting my very first Floris game later today. I was thinking of starting out by becoming a freelancer to begin with.

However, I still don't really quite understand how it works. When can I retire? What do I keep from my time as being a freelancer soldier?

Is there a better way to start my first campaign?

If I have companions, will they join me when I'm a freelancer?

Plus, what do people prefer: beginning with all companions in the starting city, or gathering them normally? If you gather them all, will they stay there, or will they all disappear after a few days as they usually do. I see that as a bit of a problem, as I can imagine it being quite difficult considering I won't have the money to instantly hire all of the ones I want!

Thanks,

Sam

  • You can retire whenever you want.
  • You don't keep anything unless you desert the army.
  • I personally do exactly what you plan on doing when I first start a new game because it's a great way to earn XP and gold. You also don't have to worry about food or troop wages.
  • Companions don't join you but will return to you when you either retire or desert the army you are freelancing for, same goes for any troops you might of had. (unless you got taken prisoner while freelancing)
  • I prefer to gather all the companions gradually because then you can figure out who is compatible with who instead of having a mass amount of complaints if you get everyone at once. They will stay with you indefinitely unless you annoy them enough or someone else annoys them enough to leave. They don't usually leave after a few days.

Hope this has helped

Thanks for that, I appreciate the response.

Further questions: When I retire, are there problems? Can I feasbily work as a soldier for every nation, retiring when I get bored of them? Is there any adverse consequences to my retiring?

My problem with the gradual gathering of companions is the chasing around the world, trying to find them  Damn, that it so boring...

Just a suggestion from my point of view also. Make sure you save before choosing who you will enlist with just in case that lord...well in case he sucks.

I started a new freelance guy and spent 20 minutes (real time) watching my lord prance around the county avoiding every battle; we were at war with 2 other factions so I know there had to be some people to kill. The only action I saw was 976 of our troops (5-6 of his fellow Rhodok lords) against 11 Swadian villagers.

Needless to say I went back to my old save and picked a new lord to enlist with.

Is there an easy way to tell who is the marshal without joining the faction in question?

Ask a lord or lady in the faction where folks are.
Or check with lord all the others are following around.

Fair enough, thank you for the advice.

A quick additional question: What does the Rebalanced troop tree offer? The one that's a compromise between Native and expanded? I'm likely going to go to expanded, and hope I don't get horribly confused, but how different is the middle ground?

The above link shows the expanded tree but no screenshots of the reworked. I always used the reworked at first then later moved to the expanded. The difference is the number of troops available between reworked and expanded. Expanded was to overwhelming for me at the beginning so if you always end up restarting your game over anyways (like I do) I'd say try reworked for a while then go to expanded.
