I'd guess that the wage deducting house could be exploited, so I'd say you pay for the week that you put them in, but not the ones after, to avoid people putting all their good troops inside right before the week ends to avoid paying.

For the first 200-300 days I just use cavalry as I want the map speed bonus until I can field a large enough party to fight 120 enemies or so.  I kills me to have to dismiss Serduks, Lifeguards, Janissaries and Swordsman because they slow my party down, seems too wasteful, they deserve a glorious death on the battlefield.

Yeah... it'd be nice to put them somewhere. When that happens, I usually just rally as much infantry as I can then go on a siege without my doctor, the intention of having most of them die in the fighting. It doesn't always get rid of them all, and it's  screwed me up a few times 'cause of it being risky and all, but I still prefer to see them die with honour than whatever they'd normally do. It's also hard to find the doctor after =/ So I don't always do it.

Although, they don't really die when you dismiss them, they just disappear.

Yeah... so instead, I loose it for a castle/town.

I just put my troops in a castle or fortress. Normally there is one around somewhere that is pretty easy to capture.

Capturing is the easy part, getting it granted to you is another story.  You have to have more renown than all the other nobles in your faction that do not yet have a castle/fortress/town of their own.  Depending on the faction and their relative success in that campaign it could be 500 renown or more.  Unless you farm as a solo horse archer, 500 renown takes a while.

Can't you convince lords to support you? Or is that Warband only?

WF&S is based on M&B so grants are based on relations and renown at the King's discretion.

I guess that makes persuasion even more useless =P
