Steam Failed To Contact Server

I bought warband on steam probably a week and a half ago and i've been playing it ever since but unable to go online so i just played single player, but after wanting to play multiplayer i inserted my cd key for warband into the steam add a game and now its not allowing me to even launch it at all, coming up with an error message saying failed to contact server  please help
