Does anyone use this? It seemed like a good idea at first but often the battle moves too quickly to find a good spot to position them. Also, having yet another unit to command on the field means I have less time to fight and have fun myself.
What tactics do you use? Is the Stealth ability worth it? How high should you advance the skill?
When you are commanding multiple groups I find a horse very valuable. I drop everyone where I am to start with then decide where they need to move to as quick as I can, as you are right some battles there is no time or point.
I have 4 groups to command, infantry, cav, archers and fodder. If I was using stealth instead of undead fodder I would still have four.
Here is how I usually setup a battle quick with four groups, you can swap out cav or infantry for stealth, for a similar effect, fodder in your case would be your regular infantry.
Everyone follow me. - Head to nearest hill, behind preferably.
Stop fodder (Undead at bottom of hill)
Infantry, or stealth slightly to the side a bit further back.
Ranged at the back on the top of the hill.
Cav somewhere off to the side of the fight.
By the time I charge back usually it's time to set the fodder to charge, then sometimes I just charge inf and cavalry straight away (most of my infantry is companions, so they all carry double throwing weapons.) Other times I wait a second then charge them, depending on whether mages are in the enemy army, if they are I want them dead as fast as possible, so everything, especially the elite heavy cav (who are also companions) go in.
You could do the same even more effectively as stealth, setting them to move away from the battle a bit (like my cav), then come back in once the infantry is about to engage.
Every map is different though sometimes you just have to charge for the only hill there is and make a mess at the top of it, other times you don't have any time much to prepare at all literally you are already taking fire when you spawn, and no hill exists anyway, I have to spread my troops and groups out as much as possible then and try to get the ranged somewhere they can at least see something to hit.
Hope it helps.
