Starving Out A City/Castle

Hi All

There was a topic on here awhile ago about cities getting massive garrisons... Well in my game I wanted to take Jelka the last Rhod place... However they had 2500 men there plus some Lords who I had chased into the town lol....

I was annoyed but went to the besiege option anyway, I then noticed that it said only 20 days for the seige... So I thought hmm Ill give this a go...

Twenty days later and it started saying "They have run out of food and are now starving".... And... Nothing... A few days later... Nothing.... Some more days later... Nothing... Quite a few more days later... Still nothing...

So my question is... What does starving them actually ment to do? Or is it a broken feature cause the developers never thought someone would sit around for it to actually happen lol?

Cheers

I believe [and this is speaking from Native SP] that increased the chances that the city would surrender. It wasn't a guarantee, but only increased the chance.

I've never had anyone surrender anything on M+B, ever. Except when you catch up with an already routed enemy, they will sometimes. I didn't even know that a city/castle COULD surrender

I found this out awhile ago, they do surrender if they're totally outnumbered, AND out of food.

I'd like to see more siege options, but the Floris boys are busy enough with 2.5

ya the problem is, that totally outnumbered means you wont wait 20+ days to siege them.  youll just siege them.

i just did the same thing that the OP did.
I was at least expecting them to start loosing troops to starvation after the food supply time ran out.
but nope.
not a single troop lost and the 1600+ troops in praven still wont surrender to my 500+, i asked the commander every day for about a week (after the food supply was already gone).  and he just laughs at me.

conclusion: totally broken feature, should be removed or fixed.
if fixed: make troops disband every day "due to starvation", as they should (as it says in the text).  perhaps something like 5% of troops disband per day.  that would be fair.  a 2000 force losing 100 troops a day - keep in mind that as the force gets smaller, so does the 5% (1900 troops 2nd day means only 95 disband, etc.) - and keep in mind that this is only AFTER sieging them for quite awhile (20+ days) and continuing to hold the siege.
no, actually, make it 10%.  considering that you are going to end up sieging something for at base MINIMUM an entire month.  ya....10% of the current troop size, per day when out of food supply.  another 20 days of sieging that would basically bring the force in the castle down by 60% or so (not gonna do the math right now).
that would make the feature work imo.
is it possible to implement?
good idea? bad idea?

And how will he leave? Will he just walk out of the gates and hope that massive army surrounding the castle won't pay attention to him?

Could have it set up where they succumb to illness, etc. So::

Day 01: 1000/1000 Troops.
Day 20: 950/1000 Troops.
Day 30: 675/860 Troops.
Day 50: 235/512 Troops.
Etc.

So you will also be able to capture enemy troops after you take the castle/town. But then again, if the enemy out numbers you, why wait to be starved out? Also have to think, if the town is by the ocean then they could get supplies via that way. Much better to find a way to increase the likelihood that they will surrender.

Well it could be set up to have them sally out when they greatly out number you, similar to if you try to attack with a small force.

Ah well this is disappointing...

I agree to the simple disbanding ideas... They wouldnt need to walk out, they simply die lol.

Another alternative is that heaps of their men simple become wounded so technically still there but unable to fight meaning that as the defender you wouldnt lose troops so if the seige was broken off and food restored they would slowly heal back to fighting fit...

I hate to say it... But in my example in the end after literally waiting in one spot for 50 days or so... I just cheated the town as taken... I felt completely robbed of my time by the game lol.

Surrender or send the army out to attack you.
Or starve. How long the civilians are willing to starve should depend upon the current lords popularity.

Do NPC lords even have reputation though?

Dont know...

As a simple fix (or at least I think simple enough for the awesome modders here in Floris) would be making them wounded over time... Like 10% a day or something...

This would 1) Fix the problem and provide a benefit for the attacker, 2) Wouldnt totally screw over the defender if they held out and the attacker was driven away.
