Sergeant at Arms
Hey guys. This mod has been on my list for a while, gonna give it a go pretty soon. I was just curious what types of characters people are playing and finding useful/powerful?

It seems (from what little I have played and read) that most traditional M&B archetypes fall flat on their face here. So since playing heavy cavalry (which is my usual starter build for testing out a new mod) is out of the question, what's good? Are mounted gunners good? Is trading a viable early strategy? How useful is it to play a leader-type?

Help a brother out!

My strategy is pumpin' your riding, horse shooting, ironflesh 'n all that stuff, along with firearms and two-handed weapons.
then buying or looting a Katana, Colt, and a Mosin-Nagant, along with JP Bullets, and sum horse.
This gives you quite some firepower, and the Katana is perfect for mounted slashin' and close combat.
Oh and give your character a nice Oriental name, like Sensei Takesudo or sumthing.

I also chose spending my points on leadership, because you really need as much soldiers as you can get.
In the native version you can kill a 100 men by yourself, but in this mod you need backup or you get whacked big time.
Don't create or hire low amounts of melee cavalry, if you must have them, hire a lot so you can charge into yur enemy
Mounted gunners are the best, although even they get popped eventually.
Haven't tried trading.

You'll like this mod it has a lot of new things to it.

Beware of the Japanese, btw. Strong cavalry and loads of f*ckin grenadiers.

get a smg (even a cracked bit of junk) then build up a small armory for your self.

In this mod pump riding and agility, ironflesh, weaponmaster too along with firearms. Don't forget at least 1 power throw to use medpacks to heal yourself later.

I started as Whampoa academy officer, so all I got was a mauser pistol and a bayonet, so my first was to get something with decent accuracy to snipe bandits from far range, so a rifle (ignore carbines unless you like your horse dying a lot) like the Hanyang 88 or Chiang Kai shek rifle is good. Buy from baggage officer in town after bribing him if needed.  The bayonet is useless, loot a big dao or long big dao off bandits as soon as possible and you have your basic set up.

For battles I tell my men to hold a hill, spread out and dismount. Spreading out is crucial, or all your men will die to machinguns and grenades. One of my big dao squads killed 20 Japanese or so in a seige. When the enemy is almost within grenade range, order a mount horses, then charge, your men will run down the hill, throw a ton of grenades, and then charge into melee. Quite a sight to behold.

What i do:
a) Get as soon as possible a machinegun with lot of ammunition.
b) When in battle, try to find a high hill, order your troops to hold position there. You should go a little further away from your troops (so the enemy will likely shoot at your troops not at you).
c) Snipe enemy from the high ground with machinegun. Take out coehorns and machineguns, they are your worst enemy.
d) When enemy gots into grenade range, order troops to attack.

Next to *Heavy* machineguns, I find rifles to be very effective. I personally like the Mosin Nagant.

Cover, if you can find it --  Rocks, River-Banks, Large Trees, Hills -- is actually very useful in this game. You usually cant get your entire force behind it, but if it's just yourself, and perhaps a couple of Heros, you can use it -very- effectively.
My entire army got slaughtered once, leaving me alone with 22 heavily armed Japanese remaining. I managed to take them all out with a rifle from behind a sharp, crescent shaped bunker-like hill that a river made, providing awesome cover.

Unfortunately, in most battles, you wont have much cover of any type. I really hope they make some more dynamic battle scenes to allow more for such tactics.

Using SMGs can be rather satisfying, but you can get exposed on a killing spree. They're great for killing enemies on horses. Especially the Thompson. The Mauser is a good, reliable pistol. Carbines aren't that good. Certainly get cover, but keep moving, otherwise you'll get couched, shelled, grenaded. Definitely pump out strength and ironflesh, train with easy weapons to boost your firearms, it is essential. Surgery helps too, butcher's bills are high in this mod. Spread out your troops and try and join with allied lords. I prefer having a small, elite force. It has greater firepower than a load of recruits with muskets.

I've actually found carbines to be very useful myself. Not quite as powerful as rifles, but much better at range than any SMG.

Personally, my style of tactics, which involves moving away from the main force and attacking from the flank, kinda favours SMGs.

Yeah, they are pretty nice for flanking. They're also pretty nice when taking castles, since they're so much quicker to reload than regular MG's.

Indeed, it's a great assault weapon where you can't afford to inaccuracy, slow reload speed and weight of the MG.

It would be nice to have a shotgun for that, but the muskets are waaay to slow reloading for that kind of duty.
