Star Wars or Star Trek?

Grandmaster Knight
This debate is not exactly unheard of among nerds, so I figured I'd get some opinions here. I just finished watching all six episodes of Star Wars (yes I really did spend my entire Friday watching geeky sci-fi movies) and it occured to me that although I love Star Wars, I find Star Trek to be a bit dull. So I decided to ask which one other Taleworldians tend to favour. I'd also like to know whether you guys prefer the newer episodes of Star Wars or the Trilogy (episodes 4, 5, and 6), as well as which Star Trek is your favourite. So debate, discuss, dress up as Piccard/Yoda, just make this thready as nerdy as possible.

I just don't get Star Trek. It seems boring whereas Star Wars is gripping and interesting from the get go. So I suppose I like Star Wars, though it's hardly fair for me to claim it's superior when I can't accurately gauge the opposition in terms of quality.

I like the corny old Star Trek better but I think I can like Star Wars at the same time. Red shirt in the morning, sailor take warning. This is a joke about how anyone who is included in the landing party besides Kirk, Bones and Spock and sometimes Scotty will die. The original saying is red sky in the morning sailor take warning, red sky at night sailor's delight. I did like the last Star Wars movie when Darth Vader got into that heavy duty light saber fight in lava land, also it was strange how in the first two prequels it was all muppet show kid stuff but in the last one Vader is mass murdering and everything got so heavy. NOOOOOOO! hahah.

Star Wars vs. Star Trek? This never ends well.

Since nobody can actually force you to choose, why not just take both, or pick whichever one you like more and just (somehow) live with the fact that other people like the other one more?

I just have trouble seeing an underlying conflict between the two.

Well, I will say that the art direction of Wars is nicer to me. In Trek, everything is humanoid, they all wear colour-coded sweaters and the weapons are remote controls.

That's about the only way my opinion of either is swayed towards one being superior.

Both, but with exceptions. Star Wars the original trilogy and Star Trek next generation for me, pretty much everything else can go in to the wood chipper.

This is stupid, one's a swashbuckler in space, and the other is something approaching real sci-fi.

Now Babylon 5 vs. BSG hmmmmm....

Or maybe Space: ABOVE AND BEYOND! vs. erm... something!

In before Firefly > everything.

Am I the only person who did not care for Firefly? Why was there Japanese on every conceivable surface capable of displaying text?

I didn't find it all that interesting either. Without seeing any of the episodes before hand and knowing nothing about the series, the movie serenity wasn't all that good from a neutral perspective. After watching the episodes, again nothing.

Wasn't it Chinese?

Edit: Yes.
Whedon used the modern fear of China rising to be a major superpower when writing his plot, so the use of both Chinese and English shows that in the future, it apparently IS a superpower. The Alliance is a partnership of the two countries, so it is assumed that those are the two "business languages" that everyone must speak. Also, the use of Chinese with English shows how their culture and lifestyles are a new fusion of western and eastern, which makes the show more interesting. As said, when Chinese is used for swearing and name-calling, there is no concern about censorship. Also, sometimes it adds comical relief...An example comes to mind, although I can't remember the episode: .
-
Because in whedons vision of the future the chinese have grown as an empire and superpower, due to their current status as a rapidly developing power today.
Meaning people have learned their language as they are like America is to the world today highly influential in trade and culture.

Cowboys in space, **** yeah.

Trek and Wars are roughly the same for me. One is too far over the top as far as tech goes, the other bull****s too much.
Prefer Stargate and the other series that already got mentioned.

Personally never really liked Star Wars, so I'd fall into the Trek camp by default.

This. I prefer SW though.

I say Star Wars is better. If a SW movie was on while a Star Trek one was, I would definitely pick Star Wars.

Star Trek better than most Sci-Fi (at least the Next Generation). Star Wars better than Star Trek. Firefly better than Star Wars. Spaceballs better than Firefly. It's a simple order, really.

That's kind of a false choice. Star Wars was originally a movie, and Star Trek was originally a TV series. The best work of both is present in their native genre.

I grew up loving Star Trek TOS because there wasn't a lot going on like it in the sci-fi genre at the time (late 60s early 70s).  Its primary competitors were Lost in Space, The Time Machine, stuff like that.  I identified with Spock, as he too was a half-breed and struggled with related issues--and he was just plain cool.

I enjoyed Star Wars when it came out, but my excitement declined with each sequel.

I enjoyed Star Trek TNG quite a bit, but like Star Wars, my interest in the Star Trek enterprise declined with each series after TNG.  I enjoyed most of the movies, but I don't consider any of them to be better than a B movie.

If I could only watch one or the other for the rest of my life, it'd be Star Trek, no question.  I've seen each Star Wars film so many times recently anyway that I want to throw up--the cable service here seems to have a dire shortage of material, and a penchance for playing the same **** over and over.
