HI I asked this question before, but could not find my previous post, so I apologize for double posting.

I accepted a quest to follow a spy, but the spy is not outside the town to follow and I can't find the guy who is supposed to "point him out" to me according to the Emir who gave me the quest.

Someone suggested that I had to appear in the town square during the day to make this happen, but I have looked at all times of day and night, in the streets and on the world map.
Any other suggestions how a spy quest is supposed to work?

in old M&B when you accepted the quest you would automatically wait in the town and you're supposed to spot the spy leaving the town, however this was quite hard due to the fact that it happens so quickly and multpiple parties might be leaving. You were then supposed to follow int he direction they went after time returns to pause and find the spy next to another party of people.

haven't gotten it in this version, but it is a very confusing and difficult quest to complete if you don't notice them leave.

Okay spy missions are a bit weird.  It took me a bit to finally do them.

  • First, you'll auto-wait in the city where the spy was.  I had immediately failed once though because the spy meeting was right outside the city.  All others have been some distance away.
  • Second, follow the tracks.  They generally go quite a ways before you find them.  Often it will turn night and you'll lose the tracks.  If this happens, you'll have to extrapolate where the spy went based off the terrain and his direction.  Note that the devils will wait at the meeting place so you have you full time period in the quest to find them.
  • Thirdly, when you find them, there are two groups.  Both have a, "common townsperson," in them.  Now this second part is important, knock him out.  Do not kill him.  I always have my people hold in place and since I use Heavy Military Hammers don't have a problem with knocking them out.  You see you need to capture them and not chop them up into kibble.
  • Lastly, do this for each group.  One group will be the spy alone.  The second will be his contact with caravan guards as protectors.  Capture both.

You need to capture only their leader, you can kill rest. However it is sometimes hard to recognize who is the leader so if you want to be sure, knock out all of them.

Pathfinding skill is your friend (I have mine at 4 in combination with one companion). Follow track with single person in group. It will lead you to meeting point. However try to stay away from spy while he is on the way to meeting point. If you are too fast and get too close, he will sense danger and abort mission.

Thanks these are all good tips! I will give it another shot and probably have to built up my path finding skill a bit.

Basically as soon as you accept the quest and get back into the game map, be ready to click your mouse somewhere to go out of "wait" mode - the spy is traveling alone and is quite fast, so can disappear off your screen in a jiffy.

Keep your eyes opened for a solo rider marked with light blue letters and follow him.

I managed to do this quest easily in Mount & Blade, but when I got Warband the spy's tracks were there, but the spy was nowhere to be found near/with the group.

If you catch the group waiting in one spot, that means they are conferencing.  Once you defeat the main group and capture the first guy (Unremarkable townsfolk) a second, solo guy will appear (Ordinary townsfolk), just attack that lone guy after you finish the first group, capture him, and you're good to go

Oh! I thought I remembered the spy joining the other little group, I guess I remembered wrong
Thanks! : D

Outside the city you will often see the spy charging away like hes shot from a gun. Be sure the tracks you follow say "party of one", thats the spy. On occasion you can do the combat with both spy and the party hes meeting at the same time. Be sure to tell your troops after combat has begun, "blunt weapons only".

Yea well guess what? I stumbled on the bunch of them by coincidence a long ways from the original city; in spite of telling my troops "blunt weapons only" and even "hold this position" so that I could deal with the "ordinary townsfolk" myself, some idiot archer still managed to kill them from a distance before I could knock them out with a staff. Basically I failed this mission in the end.  :???:
I think this kind of mission is best taken alone or with just some companions, with troops its near impossible because as with many other scenarios some troops simply do not follow orders.

Blunt weapons only apply to melee weapons, according to your troops. Have everyone Hold Fire....but usually some dumbass still can't follow orders.....I think you have to speak Braille for him to understand...

A solution to the archers firing could be to tell them to hold fire, or if you don't want to take any chances, tell the trouble soldiers to retreat while you and your blunt weapon men, or just you remain in the battle.

This mission can be troublesome, I've failed it twice of the three times I got it.  Succeeded my first attempt, the second one the spy didn't move and just stood there within the city walls, then as soon as I moved he 'spooked' and disappeared cos I got too close. The third time I foolishly took the quest during the night, and that short wait while he gets a head start took him out of my field of view. Found his tracks but they got crossed up with a legion of bandit tracks and I never found him again.

And yeah archers don't listen to your 'blunt only' request.  With the recent accuracy improvement they can be a real menace if you don't tell them to hold fire or hold position out of range.

You can tell the archers to retreat, or, if you are willing to turn difficulty settings down, (if you need to) you can tell everyone to retreat and then wipe the floor with the bastards.
