I captured Dun Taruo, but now the king gave it to somebody else, does that matter at all for the mission?

Nope, just has to belong to the kingdom for 30 days.  I found it easier to have it given to somebody else and then plopped a refuge by it and jumped Alban armies as they approached. For much of the time we held it there were zero garrison soldiers

I got irritated that they gave it to someone else, so I rejected that and kept it, now I am stuck in a bug.  I make peace with Northumberland who is happy to do it because they got big problems, but then a few seconds later it says I declared war on Northumberland and it is back to battle.  Then I declared war on Alban and started taking more castles and found out at that point I could not assign any fiefs to my companions.  So I am stuck in some kind of unknown lord status.

you broke the quest line. Let them conquer all your territory (so you wont be a king anymore), make peace with them and use the cheat menu to reset your quest. Update to 1.03 / 1.166 too.
