Special Units

Recruit
I just upgraded some peasant women all the way to sword sisters (I think that's the right name), and I think it's really cool that a unit that appears to be completely useless at first could evolve into a pretty cool little unit. I also like how the only way to get a peasant woman is through rescuing them, instead of the same ol' hiring. I'd like to see some more of these semi-secret units in the game in the future.

I can't really come up with any ideas for new units right now, that would evolve unexpectedly like the peasant women do, but I guess that's why Armagan is making the game and I'm not.

Anyway, I'd be sort of interested to see if anyone has any ideas for new units, and what their upgraded forms would be.

[edit] Ooh, just had an idea! What about support units that don't necessarily join combat, but have some other effect. Maybe squires that give your knights an armor bonus (or something more relevant to whatever squires did in real life), or minstrels to help raise morale (once it's implemented), or something like cooks to make food last longer. Seems like this would add far more variety to the units than just changing their combat skills/equipment. It would also require some more thinking... should you sacrifice a slot that could be used to hold more troops in order to make the ones you already havee more effective? Well, just an idea, do with it what you will. [/edit]

if they did implement this, I hope there would be a separate list for secondary units, like the separate hero list i suggested. It's already hard for me to level up my units, because once they're ready to upgrade I need another slot to put them in.

If support units get added then of course you need the option of taking the enemy's support units prisoner or mercilessly butchering them.

Well, squires were not just to 'provide an armor bonus'
There were to allow knights use armor at all. In RL (and I've seen it myself) it's nigh impossible to don a plate mail in less then half hour WITH outside help. W/o help, it will take up to a few hours, or be impossible altogether, depending on how it is constucted. That's one of downsides of plate mail, that is quite overpowered otherwise . It has least weigh, most protection and, if done right, will allow great freedom of movement.

So, then, a squire could maybe increase attack speed a bit? See, I was close.

Er, maybe a blacksmith/armorer could increase armor.

Given, it's unlikely that such a system would ever be implemented, but I still think it would make things more interesting.

if a squire was added, you think he could carry an extra weapon for me? id like to take my lance bow and sword without giving up my arrows or sheild  Isnt that what they did most the time, fetch the stuff knightes needed and brought it to em?

"Perceval, fetch me a cold one from the fridge!"
"Aye milord!"

You should be able to have special characters that give you a bonus to your non-combat skills. Surgeons (You wouldn't have to spend points in surgery and wound treatment), trainers (would give a bonus to one or two fighting skills of you and your party), scouts (pathfinding, tracking and spotting), merchants (trade and wages), whor... Well, you get the general idea. And since they would take up one of the unit slots you'd think twice before hiring them.

Thats what i already do with borcha and marnid.. Ones my healer, the others my tracker and they each take a slot.
