Spear hits

Why there is no such type of spear hit in Brytenwalda?

I took it from "With Fire And Sword":

I watched some historical program about vikings and their fighting style with shield and spear (in the shield wall formation too) on discovery channel. This hit was one of their favorite. Spear above your head. Just in the enemy`s face. I think all warriors around the world used it. It quite universal.

Character on these screenshots do it with both hands.  Make him do it realistic way with only one hand. Shield will remain at its place - in the another hand.

I`m not saying to replace the old one with the new one, i`m saying to add a new type when you move your mouse forward for example... Any way, it more realistic than those strange swing hits)

Actually, this overhand strike did show up for a while in BW, courtesy of WB, I imagine. It was very annoying; couldn't hit anything with it or control it in any way. Idibil was very confused when I complained about it. The next version of WB it disappeared.

BTW, note that in the screenies the hand hold is reversed from your models. Confused me for a while because I didn't see the grip changing in the WB animations; then I realized the grip in WB is reversed from the "natural" overhead grip.

I've never played the Vikingr Mod but I'm pretty sure they have incorporated the overhand spear thrust.  I think you can toggle it by pressing 'X' just like going from one to two handed sword mode.  Here's a screenshot taken in July from that mod

Well, it works normal in that game. Yes, its harder to aim the head... But it works good when you are in the second line of formation, and there are hordes of enemies, so you will surely hit some one.

Yes, its not perfect on those screenies... I`m sure, you guys can do better

By the way, javelin throw animation... Maybe take it as a base?

I was watching demonstrations of the shield wall on Youtube, and that's precisely what the spears in the second rank were doing. The guys in the first rank were pretty much just defending.

It made less sense when I was on horseback!

Actually, TW is quite correct. If you use a spear both over- and under-handed, either one grip will have to be backwards or you have to release the spear to change grip (or use a double bladed spear).

Aren't all spears double bladed?
I meant a blade on each end. It's not common. Before seeing jarids in M&B, the only other example I could recall was a double-bladed cavalry yari in some Samurai movie. For cavalry, no one is standing behind and the horseman can strike both sides of the horse with relatively more ease.

I think we had a good diskussion about this some 2 months ago: http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/topic,184029.0.html

I think we concluded that the verhand thrust was a product of artists making the warrior looking more fierce. Please check the link and add your toughts to the debate. I'd be glad for more input. Personaly, I always fought with the underhand thrust in reenactments since I couldn't manouver/stear the spear that well on overhand attacks. Besides, it was to easy to parry the overhand attack and knock my weapon out of control for to long.

I still have a few doubts. If they locked shields like they did in that movie, I guess it might be a good idea with an overhand attack. Just remember that you can't jump around like that expert in medieval combat is doing. You just can't do that if there's a dude behind you, and besides it would cause holes in the shield wall if you did. 1 vs 1, you can jump arround like that, but look at how the tip of the spear is flailing arround. That's what I ment in my earlier post. One blow to the side of the spear (parry), and the spear might even flail out of your hand. It's happend me a few times, and you'll only have your wrist to controll it back into possition. I'd choose the underhand attack in a 1 vs 1, since then you can keep controll of the spear, and use more length of the weapon. You can still jump just as much as you do with the overhand attack. I've beaten many men with a 2 handed spear, 1 vs 1. They couldn't even get close. 1-handed tough, that was trickier.

Interesting movie tough, AlexGvr. Thanks. I was hooked right away
