Terran gauss rifles are meant to penetrate starship-grade metal armor. Ceramics won't stand a chance.
That' s just bad balance in the Starcraft game and I get the feeling that you're pulling this out of your ass. What we're talking about here is fluff. The fluff in the Wiki tells us, as I've said twice already that the gauss rifles MAY penetrate 2 inches of steel.
Aye.  Look at any of the cinematics for SC.  In-game, the Battlecruiser is about as tall as a Marine and as long as ten.  That's the size of a modern fighter.  Compare that to the BC in the opening for BroodWar, which was huge.  Actually, for a better example, look at the Amerigo.  A science vessel that requires a detonation team of five marines and a ghost goes to blow it up.  Why do that when, according to you, the infantry could just park outside and shoot it for about ten seconds?  SC's game balance also implies that your fabulous Gauss rifles take 6 bursts to kill civilians wearing a breathing mask and unpowered, unarmored pressure suits.  Wow.

It is a game, a believably-sized and powered bc would not have been very funny.

I'm aware.  It was rather my point, since Breaker was going on about how marines can shoot down BCs and that meant they'd kick Astartes ass.

So we have an interesting situation here:

In WH40K, the fluff is the lie and the actual game is reality.

In SC, the fluff is the truth and the actual game is the lie.

Pretty much. The difference between the cutscenes and the game is hilarious. Especially in the stuff we've seen in the new game.. in the cutscenes a battlecruiser is the characters home and base of operations.. in the game they're simply somewhat small expendable units..

What about the blue-armored marine we see in the Starcraft 2 launch trailer  It's too awesome to be like.. a 1st-tier unit.

He...doesn't do a whole lot. He gets some metal plates bolted onto his body and that's it.

Yeah, pretty much.  Part of it is that in WH40k, the fluff changes so much and is mostly written from the point of view of the Codex that the fluff pieces are from.  Part of it is to set up how badass the Astartes are, but then to impress on everyone how dangerous their opponents are, you have to have enemies that can kill Astartes easily.

Depends, who are you fighting?  He was bolted into his armor, its not like they expected to see him again.

The whole idea was to make people think "wow, if this is a marine, I can hardly imagine what the rest would be"

The fun part: He's actually one of the important characters.

With the good ol'fashioned tactic of continually chucking soldiers at the enemy, hoping they'll eventually snuff it.

Imperial Guard will win.
If they made a combined effort they probably would, since they have billions and billions of soldiers at their command. However, I don't see it happening due to the sheer complexity of the logistics involved. The fact that they are spread out over millions of planets isn't helping either.
Marines, however, strike with pinpoint accuracy and would be able to defeat any IG regiment before help (would take months - years), or in many situations call for help even arrived (sometimes up to weeks).

Not that they'd fight eachother though.

Oh, they'd fight each other. Just convince bosses on either side that the other side is heretic.
Convince all 1000+ SM chapters that basically all of humanity succumbed to heresy? Not to mention convince the millions of IG worlds.
