Sound's - Difference Between .ogg and .mp3

Users who are viewing this thread

Im working on a sound mod , using various monty python/life of brian sound's to replace the existing one's.

Although i have stumbled onto a rather...'anoying' problem. Ogg file's can't be opened with any music player program's , which is anoying , i can convert them... but i am wondering what the difference between having .ogg file's and having .mp3 files is?

Anyone?

[edit] Someone answer already! It's been 10 Minute's!!!!

[edit2] 11 goddam view's and none of you post yet!!!!!!!!......gah......

winamp can play ogg files www.winamp.com, audacity is another (more of a soundedit util) that can play ogg files. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Difference between ogg and mp3? ogg is higher quality, it's use is completely free (no patent fee for music developers, like it is for mp3) and the compression rate of ogg is higher.
Downside of ogg is that it's not as common and not (yet) usable by many of the mainstream player (as you noticed).

Thankyou!!!!! SOMEBODY ANSWERED!!!! - May you be blessed with rich's

Ok...Well whilst that help's , i did manage to figure out how to play them.
Although about the mp3 costing more money...hmm....most mp3's (excluding song's) do-not cost money.

I suppose my first post didn't describe in huge detail what i wanted to know , but rather "Why" do they use some mp3 files and some ogg files for the sound's. And also , Can i simply use an mp3 with the same name as an ogg and will it work?

I downloaded 2 program's , 1 changes ogg to mp3 , the other changes mp3 to ogg , but the latter of the two only let's me do it 10 time's , and im not paying $20 for some program i won't use much.

No it doesn't cost anything for us users. But for thoose who make the songs/sounds/whatever it does. A bit like royalty perhaps, i'm not 100% sure exactly how it works.

Take the devs for Mount&Blade for example. If they use mp3's in the game, they will have to pay a fee for that. If they use .ogg they don't have to pay.

Close. The company that made the songs has to pay a royalty for using the mp3 format, since they are making money off it. If taleworlds got the songs from another company, which one thread confirmed, then they don't have to pay for it. But the company that sold the song does. Mp3 is free if not used in any commercial product. Think about windows media player. It allows you to make mp3 copies of songs on your CDs. but you don't have to pay, because they are for private use only . Microsoft did have to pay for that, since they used the encoder in a commercial product. You’re right about ogg. It is a free open-source format, so there are no royalties to pay. Whether it is better than mp3 is arguable. I spent two days reading a Slashdot article about mp3 vs. ogg where hundreds of people talked about how one beats the other in certain areas under certain circumstances.

For the technical side, arguments abound and are often pointless.

Maybe I'm not much of an audiophile but I don't hear much difference.

Ogg compatible consumer electronics products are not many at this stage and I'll probably wait till that happens before seriously going into that.

Either way, I think the game uses mp3s at least primarily if not exclusively.

Doesn't it depend on the algorithm you use for making mp3s whether you have to pay something or not? Afaik the LAME algorithm is for free and thus the mp3 should be free, right???

Anyway, 'mediamonkey' should be able to convert ogg into mp3 and vice versa and it is for free.
