I know both of these have been mentioned but they haven't had enough emphasis:
1. Secondary attack, the idea by Destichado, is a really good idea for all the reasons on his post.
But the main one I want to talk about:
2. Dodging, this has been mentioned a few times but (by what I have seen) not enough. It would be rather simple to implement, just something like holding right mouse button, jump and a direction key to make the player do a short and fast jump in the chosen direction, this would add a very interesting new level to the combat system that would also help a lot while facing many enemies. You could for example: see the enemy prepare a slash, you dodge/jump backwards, his slash misses, and while he is recovering you dodge/jump forward and deal a quick strike that he doesn't have time to block. This would probably have to be limited or balanced in some way, but it would be very useful and cool to do.
Just a suggestion
