SOD v5.0 Lore preview: Gaius and the Centurions UPDATED

ATTENTION, PLAYERS !

The dialogues displayed in the SPOLER tags are only parts of larger speeches, so you'll get the full texts ONLY when v5.0 is out !

There are eight Centurion types in total, divided among their numbers.

The types are:
Capitalist
Crusader
Imperialist
Liberator
Nihilistic
Racist
Respectful
Sane

I leave Legate Gaius Marius to the end.

Each type uses different texts for various situations. Some Centurion types have unique features that the others lack. Also, each Centurion type has one unique dialogue.

"CAPITALIST" CENTURION

The Capitalist Centurions are from the great, influential merchant families of the empire. They participate in the Invasion of Calradia for material gain. And they all have attitude problems...

<Centurion>:  So the offspring of the late <Player nation> monarch DID survive, just like the gossip said. I must say, it's quite saddening that a spawn of royalty like you can't even afford a proper retinue ! Where is the world sinking, for Marsus' sake ?! Ah well, I suppose a refugee such as you had not much pocket money to begin with. Here, poor beggar, take a few Denars and buy some warm boots ! Hah !
<Player>: Keep your Denars, scum. And I WILL step into your face if you keep up this tone.
<Centurion>: Pah ! As if you were someone who I should fear ! Do you even know who you face, peasant ?! I am <Centurion name> !
<Player>: Hm... aren't you from one of the great merchant families of the empire ?
<Centurion>: Indeed I am. As such, all of my family, especially myself, deserve according respect. Bow before me, peon, and I'll forgive your earlier insults.
<Player>: With all due respect sir, you deserve to have your manhood ripped off by a wild cat.
<Centurion>: THAT DOES IT ! From now on we're mortal enemies !
<Player>: We were enemies to begin with, but whatever.

What makes such a man a source of fear, envy and hate alike ? His money. Nothing more, nothing less. However, Capitalist Centurions acknowledge only the positive side of their endless wealth, and are obsessed to ever expand it. This is what makes them cunning and sometimes daring.

In the unique dialogue, you can ask them what's up with their obsession with money:

<Centurion>: Uhh, such a naive mind ! No wonder your clothing is in such a horrible condition. It is not me- ...or rather, not 'just' me who needs such an enormous amount of riches. It is the family. With wealth comes power and influence. Honestly, what fairy tales are circling around your head ? Money IS everything ! Where do you think even the kings' power comes from ? Their birthrights ? Nay, it's all about the money, like everything else ! No king can govern with an empty treaury, <Player name> ! In fact, the kings don't even own their countries at all; it is the guildhouses, the trade alliances, the merchants who control things.

What makes the Capitalist Centurion fearsome for the man of today is the fact that history proved him true, at least partially.
However, his greatest power - money - is also a source of despise towards him, as he places his interests well above that of ordinary people. As such, he's quite eager to make sacrifices that don't involve losing his money:

<Player>: You don't even respect your very own soldiers ?
<Centurion>: Why should I ? They are but tools towards a purpose, just like any serf or farm-hand. I'm actually glad when we suffer some over-average casualties, at least the dead don't ask for any more salary. And can you imagine what it's like back in the family manor ? I had to raise the taxes of the peasants - again - to ensure that paying my troops won't reduce the profit rates. Ah well, no problem. Once the war ends and the soldiers are disbanded, the income from the higher taxes will be all the better.

If a Capitalist Centurion attacks you, you can try to persuade him to leave you alone - but that doesn't come free. As a unique feature, he'll ask for a bribe. If you pay him, he'll leave you. If not, he'll attack you.

<Player>: I'm sure we could talk this over... over some Denars, that is.
<Centurion>: A tempting offer. Normally I would dismiss such pleas for mercy, but ach, I have already invested so much effort and money into this war, it would be nice to see some profit out of it already. Still, you probably understand that "persuading" the Legate to ignore my selfishness is not easy, so... I'll let you walk away freely for the price of 3000 Denars. Still, a fair trade, isn't it ?

More comical yet, he does NOT accept your surrender !

<Player>: I don't want to spill blood this day; for the moment, we'll surrender.
<Centurion>: Ahh, no ! NO ! Anything but THAT ! Do you have the slightest idea how much it will cost me to feed all of you in captivity ?! I will sooner cut off my little finger than accept your surrender !
<Player>: Okay, that's just plain ridiculous.

Man this guy is so jewish it hurts.
(No offense meant to jews, of course.)

So practically you can either fight them or bribe them to avoid battle. They give you no chance to surrender.

Last but not least, Capitalist Centurions try to bribe you if you oder their imprisonment.
But why would you take their bribe ? They are blood-sucking moneybags who deserve a harsh lesson on life !

<Player>: Keep your filthy Denars. I'll watch you chew on them when we starve you.
<Centurion>: No ! NO ! Anything but that ! I can't stand such a punishment ! I beg you ! Please... 3000 Denars ? O- or if you accompany me to the nearest town, I can make it more ! 5000 ! 10000 ! ANYTHING !
<Player>: SHUT UP. Each and every coin of yours is stained by the sweat and blood of the poor.
<Centurion>: But- but I-
<Player>: You receive a just punishment for your crimes, worm. Nothing more or less. Take him !

The reward of greed...
...is the slavery of the soul.

So sayeth <Player religion>.

"CRUSADER" CENTURION

Crusader Centurions are religious fanatics, holy champions of the Church of Marsus, cleansing Calradia from "pagans and barbarians" in the name of Marsus, warrior god of their empire.

They constantly mock the player, whenever the opportunity rises. However their blind zealotry can lead to akward situations.

<Centurion>: Hear me out, <Player name> ! I am <Centurion name>, chosen champion of Marsus, scourge of pagans and barbarians alike ! You and every <Player nation> are a nation of cowards ! Offsprings of heathen subhumans ! I was among the first to lay your castles low back in your homeland, yet you miserable bunch of weaklings didn't even have the courage to fall dead beside your brethren ! Now behold, for not even in Calradia are you safe from the might of Marsus ! And don't even expect protection from <Player religion> ! Your religion and deities are just as worthless and pathetic as every other aspect of your existence ! Tremble in terror, for the day of your last judgement is nigh !
<Player>: Are you done rambling ?
<Centurion>: What's that look in your eyes now, powerless progeny of dead monarchs ? Are you perhaps irritated by the truth ?
<Player>: THAT'S IT. Once I dealt with you, we'll bury you into a pile of horse dung.
<Centurion>: Fearsome words, <Player nation> ! I can't wait 'till you actually back them up with deeds !

Yep. Kind of morbid.

Their unique dialogue lets you to get some insight into imperial religion.

<Centurion>: You see, according to our legends, the various races - or as you may call them, "nations" - of humans were not created at the same time, nor with equal abilities and rights. The worship of Marsus accepts the existence of other gods, however the gods are in constant competition. Of course, all other gods pale in comparison to the glory of Lord Marsus. Marsus wasn't the first to shape humans, but he was the one who created the best species.
<Player>: And accordingly, you consider every other nation beside yours inferior barbarians.
<Centurion>: But of course ! And we have solid proof to back up our beliefs.

Their fanaticism is their greatest asset when it comes to battle.

<Centurion>: Rejoice, children of Marsus ! This day we exterminate the hateful descendants of the <Player country> ! Observe how Marsus will reward our offerings with exulting victory !

However, when you whoop their sorry @$$es, the same fanaticism makes them sound weak and ridiculous.

<Centurion>: No ! NO ! We cannot lose ! We cannot be defeated, how can we ?! Marsus ! I've been a loyal servant ! Why are you abandoning me ?! After so many glorious deeds... after so many... sacrifices !

If you ever get attacked by a Crusader Centurion, take note that they will refuse to delay battle under any circumstances:

<Centurion>: Behold as we cover the land with your gore, and heaven itself turns CRIMSON !
<Player>: Could it be at a later date ? I have other things to do today.
<Centurion>: Why, <Player name>, your time is the last thing I wish to waste. The first is your blood !

You can surrender without a fight if you please, but they won't appreciate your kindness:

<Centurion>: I have been preaching litanies of glorious fighting to my army the whole day, and you DARE to surrender ?! You insolent pest !

The Crusader turned out to be a sturdy and powerful, but at times somewhat comical figure. Not that I mind the more humorous aspects - what would be life like without a little laughter ?

Speaking of which, as a unique feature you can humiliate Crusaders, but that causes considerable Honor loss...

<Player>: Remember what I promised about a pile of horse dung ? Well, I like to keep my promises...
<Centurion>: Don't you DARE !
<Player>: Yes I dare. Soldiers, you know what to do !

Let's move on...

"IMPERIALIST" CENTURION

Imperialist Centurions are open-minded generals whose influence stretches across the whole of the empire. They consider you nothing more than an obstacle in the way of the empire's conquest of the world.

<Player>: You have no claim to the smallest patch of earth in Calradia ! Withdraw or die !
<Centurion>: Who are you to challenge the Imperial Legion and our birthright to rule these lands ?! Insolent scum ! I will wipe this land clean with you while that fool Gaius only waits !

The unique dialogue with the Imperialist Centurions leads to a terrible discovery...

<Player>: Is it just me, or there really are a few <Player nation> soldiers among your legionaries ?
<Centurion>: Your eyes are sharp. Indeed I have some... "foreigners" in my army, and not just from the old <Player country>, but from almost every corner of our great empire. One of the many ways and advantages of assimilating conquered nations.

The unique dialogue gives a little insight into what are things like back home. From YOUR point of view, it's a tragedy. But from THEIRS...

<Centurion>: See, in our empire, each and every nation, even the most primitive, can have a useful purpose. Antarian plate armors, Adenian war steeds, Marinan polearms and crossbows, Villianese longbows, Zerrikanian throwing weapons and helmets - our empire does have interest in them. Sooner or later, they will all serve to benefit our cause.

If Imperialist Centurions attack you, don't worry, they are fairly reasonable. You can fight them, surrender, or ask them to delay the battle. You CAN persuade them to delay the fight, and even if they refuse, they give you a second chance to surrender.

<Player>: I refuse to engage in battle until I evacuate the civilians from the area.
<Centurion>:
- (let the Player go) Hmm... very well, I'll give you the time you need to escort the local civilian populace to safety. But don't delay too long, I wish to put an end to this conflict as soon as possible.
- (Rejected) I must give you credit for your care towads your people, but unfortunately I cannot let you evade me any further. My orders have been given, my objective is clear: to destroy or capture you. Make your choice.

Their tolerant attitude towards other cultures and nations grants them a special charisma, which hastens the assimilation process in times of peace and ensures cooperation between troops of varying origin in times of war.

And THAT is what makes them truly freaky.

<Centurion>: Imagine if you had any hope of overcoming the Imperial Legion. What would it be like to return home ? Would they cheer at the sight of their righful ruler ? Or would they perceive you as yet another would-be despot who is eager to ruin their crops, houses and temples unless they willingly submit ? Think about it.

So cruel, it hurts...

"LIBERATOR" CENTURION

Liberators are quite unusual figures. Their personality alone twists the story around: they believe that YOU are an iron-fisted tyrant and THEY are the heroes who'll liberate the oppressed people of Calradia !

They have very close ties with the Legate and the Emperor, expressed by the fact that they each belong to the Order of the Hospitalier / Praetorian Guard / Akolouthos, also known as "Acolytes of the Emperor" (randomly picked from these three).

I aimed to make him a good guy, who has very good reasons behind his hatred for tyrants as well as his choice to serve in the Imperial Legion. However these events lead him to be arrogant and unable to tell whether you are actually a good guy yourself or not:

<Player>: You just met me for the first time and declare me "evil" ? What the heck ?
<Centurion>: Stop pretending your dumbness and innocence ! Your acting skills are remarkable, but you won't deceive me. I recall each and every crime your family committed both against us and their own subjects !

But on the other hand, unless you are a completely ignorant selfish bastard, you should give some of his speeches a little consideration.

<Player>: You're hasty to judge me from gossips and such.
<Centurion>: Am I now ? I believe what I see, and I see ravaged villages, ruined castles and desecrated shrines. Wherever I go, it is your name that is whispered by anger throughout entire Calradia for bringing war to the land and persecuting religions outside your own.

His unique dialogue revolves around how he became a servant of the Imperial Legion. So to say, his early life wasn't quite the best...

<Centurion>: I remember that period of history all too well; I remember the rot and plague infecting the streets; I remember the horrifying poverty and the cruelty of the city watch; I remember the severe taxes and the even more severe punishments; I remember how mothers had to throw away their children so they could have just enough food for themselves; I remember the clanking chains of slaves, who were actually once free citizens...

And it doesn't stop here. Oh nay, it doesn't...

<Centurion>: I was growing to hate my so-called "rulers". Those who took away everything and in return gave me nothing. I was alone. I was forgotten. I had nothing ! Nothing... except pure ANGER. And lo, fate has given me a chance to express my anger.

The full story will be revealed in v5.0. Sorry, you'll have to wait until then !

In case a Liberator Centurion attacks you, let me give a hint: don't ask them to delay the battle, cos' they won't.

<Player>: If YOU care about the life others, you'll let me evacuate the local civilians.
<Centurion>: To evacuate ? Where ? To slave themselves half-dead in your mines and manors ? No, <Player name>, I won't fall for that trick ! And with that said, you wasted your opportunity to submit peacefully !

In any case, I think you get the point. This character was meant to make you reconsider if you truly are the hero you believe yourself to be.

"NIHILISTIC" CENTURION

Shaping this personality was an interesting work. He's mentally damaged and that makes him scary - for you never know how he'll react to things.

That is what makes this type of Centurion appear as a truly sick and threatening personality. What could make it even more dangerous, beside the fact that such a lunatic is in a considerable position of power ?

Well, there are some factors. One is the absolute lack of sympathy...

<Centurion>: I merely wish to live out my manias... as do my soldiers. That's all this short and meaningless existence you call "life" is good for. You like the sight of fire ? Burn villages. You like beef ?  Slaughter the cattle and feed on it ! You like women ? Or men ? Take as many for yourself as you wish ! Whatever sick desire you have in your mind, live it out ! Oh, and this war ? Victories and losses ? Mere byproducts. My colleges keep me in line, though. Sad, isn't it ? So sad...

...and the other is a sort of wicked intellect that goes beyond the level of ordinary people - like you.

<Centurion>: You want to make even your emotions submit to cold logic and reason, instead of letting them loose and taking joy in them ! And you call me "miserable" ? Look at you, fool...

He has outstanding intellect for someone of his condition (you'll see if you read the full text in v5.0). However, this is only yet another fearful attribute of his rather than a redeeming quality.

Their unique dialogue revolves around why they act in the manner they do.

<Centurion>: When it's my time to feel Death's cold embrace, I will laught it in the face - for through my deeds, I will remember, and will be remembered, and thus become... immortal.

If a Nihilistic Centurion attacks you, you can try to ask them to leave the battle for a later date. There's a chance that the guy will listen and leave you in peace. However, if he refuses to delay the fight, he attacks all at once and won't give a second chance to surrender:

<Player>: Must we fight right here and now ? I don't feel like it.
<Centurion>: You can trust me when I say that I don't feel like it either. I planned your mutilation for a later date and I'd prefer to stick to my own deadlines. Hm, I like that word... DEAD-lines... eh, screw the calendar ! I feel inspired ! We'll erect statues from your corpses ! It will be an outstanding example of modern fine arts ! To arms, men ! We have a masterpiece of carnage to create !

As a unique feature, Nihilistic Centurions DIE after being defeated. You can't imprison them or let them walk away freely, though they have one more dialogue left, namely why did they become insane...

<Centurion>: We are... like those wooden puppets the carpenters make for their children... we're merely mortals, toys to faceless deities ! SLAUGHTER AND DRAMA, that's what they want to see ! And you said I was insane ?! I finally see now... that's the whole point of this... worthless... existance...

This Centurion is sick. He's insane !
Or perhaps, YOU are the one who is actually mad ?

*ominous music*

"RACIST" CENTURION

One of the hardest to create was the Racist Centurion type. I wanted to avoid making the Racist type too similar to the Crusader (a hateful bastard who sometimes makes an idiot out of himself).

In the end, he became an intellectual Nazi.

<Centurion>: Why are you holding out you hand ? You truly expect me to shake that ? Keep your distance, scum.
<Player>: Well excuuuse me for trying to be polite, "your highness".
<Centurion>: Stop pretending there's anything well-mannered about you or any of your bootlickers. It makes me sick.
<Player>: Honestly, what's your problem with us ?
<Centurion>: Nothing beside the fact that we are currently engaged in a bloody war. If I actually acknowledged my opponents as "human beings" rather than "savage barbarians who carry the seeds of an ancient madness and must be purged from the world lest they eventually destroy all that we call civilization", this war would go quite poorly. Whoever heard of a war where one side fought without hate and won ? Well ? I didn't, that's for sure. Tolerance and respect towards others than your own kind in times of conflict speak of a weak will.

As disturbing and surreal it might seem, you'd might actually find him a pretty tolerable figure who deserves respect due to his wisdom - IF you weren't sworn enemies.

His unique dialogue explains why he loathes your nation. You'd never guess it ! (You'll see in the full text in v5.0)

<Centurion>: First of all, I do not "hate" you as a person. I merely keep the Hierarchy of Being in mind.
<Player>: What is this "Hierarchy of Being" ?
<Centurion>: Beside a positive proof of your lack of proper education, it is a... system of a sort, devised and described by Laopeld Nuib, an Adenian philosopher and follower of the Spiritual Enlightment religion. [...] What's more relevant to our topic, Laopeld seperated "superior" and "inferior" nations based on certain factors.

This dialogue also shares interesting thoughts about single- and multi-culturalism.

<Centurion>: Now then, in multi-cultural societies, where one or more minorities are strongly present, mixed with the majority of the native populace, infighting is very likely both in short and long terms. Even if they manage to make peace - which is a quite temporary state, I assure you - it leads to stagnation, since the level of education, health care, information processing and other facilities must be dropped lower to meet with the cultural needs of every ethnic group. Which ends up with a few calculating elitists leading masses of morons as they please.

When a Racist Centurion attacks, be prepared that they won't let you escape.

<Player>: Would you not delay this battle in exchange of some "tribute" ?
<Centurion>: Your offerings leave me cold. If anything, you are lowering my already tiny respect towards you. Show some backbone, <Player name> ! Your parents would weep if they saw how pathetic you are now ! Make your decision and deal with the consequences like a good ruler is supposed to !

Even in defeat, he remains unwavering.

<Player>: Unlike you, I respect my opponents. For your bravery, honor dictates your release.
<Centurion>: Don't bother with showing off such pathetic combat ethics. They don't impress me.
<Player>: Just go before I change my mind. Remeber: it was an "inferior" who showed you mercy.
<Centurion>: You will regret this decision. We shall meet again.
<Player>: What a douchebag...

Intelligent, educated, charismatic...
...no wonder he hates everyone.

"RESPECTFUL" CENTURION

This man is the type of soldier who does his job when he's told to, but he doesn't necessarily do it happily. He holds no grudge neither towards you nor your nation, but as an imperial subject he is honor-bound to serve the emperor and he does love his people; a real patriot.

<Centurion>: From the high command of the Imperial Legion, I am <Centurion name>. It is an honor to meet you, even though I know that our polite conversation will soon be replaced by sounds of metal clashing metal.
<Player>: At least you are a realist. Though you don't sound as if you were enjoying the thought.
<Centurion>: Perhaps not, but as a soldier and a statesman I have to put aside personal feelings. "All for the sake of the empire", as some colleges of mine are so fond of saying.

His unique dialogue involves expressing his personal thoughts about the war and the role a monarch.

<Player>: Is this the reason behind your participation ? Merely a strong sense of duty ?
<Centurion>: Isn't that enough of a reason ? <Player name>, every form of society is built upon the principle that every member of the given community has certain duties. From the newborn to the elderly, from the poorest beggars to the richest monarchs, men and women alike, we all belong to a great social chain, in which everyone has a place to fulfill. You are no exception. Everyone under your reign serves you; in return, you have certain responsibilities as their ruler.
<Player>: I am familiar with this concept, however one must also consider the needs of the individual.
<Centurion>: To some degree, yes. But the more you live for yourself, the less you contribute to the community you live in.

He was intended to raise attention to certain moral issues as well. In times of war, when all hell sets loose, who can tell what is a crime and what is not ?

<Player>: For the damage you caused to my people, I will take you into prison.
<Centurion>: A softened form of eye-for-an-eye policy, I see.
<Player>: I am merely trying to impose justice.
<Centurion>: Justice, vengeance - what's the difference ? Is there any ? When you punish a man for something he has done by the order of others, without hatred, is that justice ? Shouldn't you punish those who gave the order in the first place ? Oh, but you can't do that, they are half the world away. Still, there's a part in you that demands the other man's suffering. What is that if not vengeance ?

Should a Respectful Centurion attack you, worry not. They are reasonable, similarly to their Imperialist/Sane colleges. You can ask them to delay battle, and even if they turn down your request, they still give a chance to surrender. I doubt any decent player would do that though, except if they're interested in checking out all dialogue texts.

<Centurion>: <Player name>, I have been given instructions to prevent you from continuing your campaign against the Imperial Legion. Judging from your fame, I suspect you aren't too willing to negotiate, even though your surrender would be highly appreciated. So, what shall it be ? The heat of spilled blood, or the cold burden of shame ?
<Player>:
- (fight) If only blood can preserve the independence of my kingdom, I'm willing to spill some.
- (avoid battle) I don't want to fight you. My death or yours, either would be a great loss.
- (surrender) I surrender. It's a small price to pay to keep my people safe for the time being.

You respect him, and he respects you.
Still, foes you are, and foes you remain.

"SANE" CENTURION

Last on the list is the "Sane" type of Centurion. What makes him sane ? Probably the fact that he's the closest in attitude to the people of modern societies: a well-educated, peace-loving jolly fellow who is more interested in fair ladies and literature than the hell of war.

By same token, his behaviour is everything but that of a soldier...

<Centurion>: Greetings, <Player name>. Your fame long preceeded your actual arrival. I salute you, heir of the <Player country> and worshiper of <Player religion>. I am <Centurion name> of the Imperial Legion.
<Player>: I salute you, my dear advesary.
<Centurion>: Now that we're past the introductions, why don't we have a feast and sign a peace treaty ?
<Player>: Excuse me, what ?

How he got into this whole mess in the first place ? Let's say this is probably one of the many reasons why most military titles are not hereditary in modern societies.

<Centurion>: I even attended the Marinan University of Sciences at a time, but I was kicked out along with every other foreign student when the war broke out. After the war, my father retired and I took up his mantle, learning of military affairs. The rest you know.
<Player>: You don't seem to enjoy your current work too much.
<Centurion>: Indeed, I'd rather become a scholar if I could choose.

Don't let his naive, nigh childish attitude fool you, though. He's still a Centurion, and just because he isn't a tough guy himself you shouldn't overlook the soldiers who serve under him. Not to mention Gaius Marius' patience has its limits...

<Player>: <Centurion name>, I say this once, and only once: put down your arms and I'll let you live !
<Centurion>: If I surrender, then it will be the Legate who executes me ! Sorry <Player name>, but if you challenge me, I can't back down. You, on the other hand...
<Player>: Don't even think of it !
<Centurion>: Please <Player name>, be reasonable ! If you submit without bloodshed, your people could live and prosper in peace ! You may even keep your crown ! Why must you insist on fighting ? Do the lives of your soldiers mean NOTHING to you ?
<Player>: I won't take a lecture on the value of life from those who assisted the genocide of my people !
<Centurion>: It was not ME, dammit ! (Sigh)... I was secretly hoping it wouldn't come to this, but you are leaving me no choice.
<Player>: There never was a choice. Your family owes mine a debt of blood; it's time to pay up.
<Centurion>: ...so be it. But remember: you choose this fight, not I.

Similarly to Imperialist and Respectful Centurions, Sane Centurions can be asked to delay battle, and even if they refuse to do so they give a second chance to surrender.

On a sidenote, if a Player decides to surrender to any Centurion, he/she will get a short story text which hints how he/she will break free. These texts further deepen the personality of the individual Centurions. Needless to say, Sane Centurions are the nicest guys in such a situation:

<Player>: I don't want to spill blood needlessly. I surrender... for now.
<Centurion>: Thank you. You have no idea what burden you freed me from. Come now, <Player name>; I'll make sure you are treated well. (After you're chained and placed among the rest of the prisoners, you realize <Centurion name> somehow slipped a key to your pocket. If an opportunity presents itself, you can free yourself and escape ! Yeah, IF the guards are unwary enough...)

The Sane Centurion was shaped to introduce a figure who has no place in a battlefield, yet he's still in the middle of one. The more you know him, the more guilt you'll feel if you whack him (unless you are a heartless bastard to begin with).

Yes, you can look down on him.
Yes, you can fight him.
But could you hate him ?

...

And now, we arrive to the final figure, supreme leader of the whole Imperial Legion, second in power to the emperor himself !

LEGATE GAIUS MARIUS

Making the Centurions was a great challenge, but Gaius alone proved to be harder to create than all of them combined.

When I got down to shaping his character, I had quite a difficult time to decide what sort of arch-enemy he should be. Don't forget folks: without great villains, there are no heroes. Think of the Beowulf fables for example. Beowulf was nothing but an ambitious simpleton - he needed Grendel to be a real hero. There was a time when heroes and villains were black-and-white personalities, but in modern literature you hardly get any credit for making such figures, unless we're talking about children's literature.

I tried to imagine myself in front of the Legate. What would it be like ? How would he talk ? What voice would he have ? How would he make gestures ? What are his hobbies and favourite foods ? Would he break my spine in half if I complained about how the <Player name> raped five Centurions in a row ? And so on and so forth.

Overall, I can say he turned out to be a complex personality.

<Legate Gaius Marius>: I must compliment your accomplishments. Raising your own kingdom here in Calradia must have been a difficult task. I feel somewhat sorry that after all this hard work, you too must submit to our glorious empire, or fall dead trying to resist us.
<Player>: Spare me your threats, Legate. I have sworn to avenge my homeland, and it shall be so.
<Legate Gaius Marius>: This remains to be seen as of yet, <Player name>. When that time comes, make sure you are well-prepared, lest you may regret taking such an oath.
<Player>: I could say the same to you, Legate. History may repeat, but the roles are often reversed.
<Legate Gaius Marius>: So true, so true. Until that time, then...

The complexity of his character is further emphasised by the fact that he has not one, but FOUR unique dialogues !

You can ask him what life is like back in your homeland, and what plans do they have should the Invasion of Calradia succeed. His answers not only reveal the malicious workings of the empire, but also the wicked intellect with which they are carried out.

<Legate Gaius Marius>: Once this campaign in Calradia is finished, we'll overthrow all the remnants of the decadent Zerrikan nobility and establish a proper imperial governorship. We will be hailed as savior and liberators.
<Player>: Saviors and liberators ? I'd like to see how you pull THAT off.
<Legate Gaius Marius>: It's easier than you'd dare to imagine, <Player name>. Nations as a whole can have dreadfully short memories at times. They remember how they were invaded by us, yes. But are we cruel to them in Antaria, Villian or Aden ? No. In certain ways, we are a lot more humanitarian than their so-called "righful overlords". And Marina or Zerrikania ? We pulled the troops out and gave power in the hands of would-be tyrants. It is not us who tax them so heavily; it is not us who make them work to death; it is not us who restrict their religions. Just wait and observe, <Player name>. A decade, perhaps two, and nobody will give a damn anymore about an invasion by the Imperial Legion that occured such a "long" time ago when they have a lot of other trouble to put up with, imposed on them by their own rulers.

Secondly you can ask Gaius to tell the story of his life and share some of his views about war in general. He lived a dutiful life, so to say. He's an obedient servant of the Emperor, however unlike some others he does not let his sense of duty dull his common sense.

<Player>: And you're satisfied by being a tool towards a sick end like world dominance ?
<Legate Gaius Marius>: Do not talk as if you had the right to judge me. Where would this world sink if ordinary people began questioning the authority of their superiors ? You wouldn't be too joyful either if one of your Lords turned upon you because he doesn't think that you rule justly enough, would you now ?
<Player>: That is something I can't argue with. Still, your methods of war are cruel.
<Legate Gaius Marius>: My young friend, war in itself is cruel, regardless of why it is fought for.

What's more, he proves that everything is relative, preceeding Einstein by centuries.

<Legate Gaius Marius>: Yes, I have contributed to the conquest of five nations, including yours. But ask yourself: what did it take for you to claim a kingdom on your own ? How many corpses pave the roads you walked upon ? Hundreds ? Thousands ? The native countries of Calradia are in chaos and disarray, thanks to you. How many villages, castles and towns have been ravaged and burnt in your wake ?

And here you thought YOU were a good guy ? HAH !

You can also ask him what's behind his empire's constant need for conquest, and what sick visions does Emperor Janus Constantinus have in mind that he is hell-bent on world conquest.
(Note that the text below will make full sense only when you read the whole in v5.0 !)

<Legate Gaius Marius>: Each and every emperor of our empire had their own reasons. The current emperor, Janus Constantinus, is somewhat different from them, however; he has a vision of a world that is free from the curse of Time.
<Player>: Curse of Time ? What nonsense is that ?
<Legate Gaius Marius>: A nonsense that can ruin individuals and nations alike. Time is always in motion, <Player name>. Nothing is eternal; in due time, even mountains of solid rock begin to abrade and crumble. One day, this entire world will come crashing down to the abyss. Will it end with a great bang ? Or will we make ourselves extinct before it ? Or shall the human race continue to exist, slowly drowning the world by its inbred corruption and lust for dominance, until apocalypse will be something to actually long after ? I believe none of these horrors are desirable.
<Player>: These are disturbing visions indeed, but what do they have to do with the present ?
<Legate Gaius Marius>: If you rule the present, you overcome the past and control the future. You may call my emperor a madman if you wish, but all this fighting, as gruesome it may be, serves the whole of mankind.

Not only is Gaius a wise and charismatic leader, but the emperor he serves under, the ruler of the whole of the empire is not an ordinary man either; he has ideas, plans and thoughts which well preceed his own time.

Lastly...

Honestly, did you think your escape from the clutches of the ruthless and super-efficient and well-organized Imperial Legion was mere dumb luck ?
Ask Gaius, and think again.
(I purposefully won't post any spoilers on this !  )

If he attacks you, you have the same options and possible outcomes as in the case of Imperialist/Respectful/Sane Centurions.

<Player>: Is there no way to delay this fight ? I think we'd both prefer to face the other in full strength.
<Legate Gaius Marius>:
- (let the Player go) I'm starting to worry I let you too close to myself. Very well, for this once I'll let you go; but next time we are nigh certain to come to blows. Now go from here.
- (rejected) That was a low blow, <Player name>. Indeed, I'd prefer some other date for our clash but you need to realize there are forces out there which have already decided instead of us. There is no more place for arguing.
<Player> (if "rejected"):
- (fight) Very well. No more arguing. Only death. We'll fight to the last drop of blood !
- (surrender) Then I surrender... for now, that is. The war is not yet over.

When you defeat him, he has a few interesting things to say...

<Legate Gaius Marius>: If only I hadn't learnt ethics, maybe my conscience wouldn't have disturbed my thinking all the time. I could try to run away. I could try to beg for my life. I could stab my own sword through my heart to escape capture. But no; my heart protests against all of these. Still, somehow this defeat is... relaxing.

And the final outcome ?
The choice is yours.

You can let him go free, imprison him, execute him right away, or...

Ask him to join !
But that requires a LOT of Honor.

All in all, Gaius' personality can't be described as simply as his Centurions'. He is both a manipulative and efficient warlord who is eager to carry out his emperor's plans at whatever horrible cost, but at the same time he's something of a charismatic fatherly figure who cares for everyone and is very conscious of the terrible deeds he has to commit during his service.

Against him, you hold no moral high ground - quite the contrary. HE towers above you, both morally, intellectually and militarily.

Against such a foe, can there be "real" victory ?

...

That's all folks ! I hope you enjoyed the preview.

I've been kind of a lurker on the forums, thus I am new.

Great job on this one, Morris. I like the fact that you present a different form of view on the whole Invasion of [Player's homeland]

Great job on the personalities, especially the Sane one, and I can't wait till the upcoming release
.

release sod 5... NOW!

Morris B respect! I read the whole tekst and I'm amazed...

I want to play sod 5 now... i want to discover all those full dialogues

Really this is VERY well writen!

If you ever consider writing a book about sod or something like that pls tell me i'l buy it!

edit: bloody sam is cool reading faster than me :p

@samiscool22: welcome among us, mate !   I thank you for your compliments. Yeah, I wanted to make the player face moral dilemmas. The Sane Centurion was actually the easiest to create, but I had fun with it nevertheless. A "civilian" in the middle of a war is always a curious theme, yup ?

@manekemaan: thank you too, maan. As for a book, if I ever finish "SOD: Journals" (which I intend) I might consider it

@mane :3

@Morris Thats what usually makes the 'civilian' more interesting, finding out why he had to go to war

Will there be an option to accept the bribe that the Capitalist Centurion gives you? Like if you're in need of some moolah immediately, and you can't wait for the ransom? I'd love to be able to go for the Capitalist Centurions as dinar-farms.

Yes, you CAN accept the bribe - at least I hope Kuba will be able to program it - so far he didn't report any problems though, so let's hope for the best. BUT it will have consequences.

The bribe itself is 'bout 2000 Denars (we might change it later though), and if you accept it, you practically let the Centurion go free (meaning he'll go back to his colleges and gather an army again), and you also lose Honor which influences some things in the game (ie, the Boar Clan will attack you more frequently if you have too low Honor).

(Not to mention Gaius won't join you if your Honor is low)

Hopefully the Boar Clan won't learn how to raid villages.

Can't wait. Recruiting Gaius is sounding awesome already.

One question though; Are you introducing the Emperor, with his own dialogue? Or have y'all decided to use him later? Or not at all?

@manekemaan: wow. I can't even begin to state what's wrong with what you just said.

Btw, I better make this clear: Emperor Janus Constantinus won't make an appearence. Never ever. He's far too precious (and old) to endanger his majestic self in battle.

He's only talked about. Some Centurions (especially Liberators) make mention of him, and Gaius Marius talks about him (or rather, his thoughts and ideals) in detail. But the emperor himself won't come to Calradia.

However, we have some plans for the potential future Warband port. He won't appear there either, but you'll get to know him more (but I won't share more details).

You've once again outdone yourself MorrisB! A great read! It makes me feel worse than I already did for conquering Calradia though...

This stuff, changes the way I see the Life.

In that case I don't advise you playing SOD v5.0 when it's out, it will cause your brain 200 damage per Centurion at average.

Like it.  Capitalist seems like a misnomer and an anachronism.  I suggest Materialist or Acquisitive.

1. "Capitalist", along with every other type name ("Racist", "Sane", etc.) is a codename, and thus has no real meaning in gameplay terms. We can change this codename any time, but I repeat, there is no impact on the game in any way.
2. When I was designing the "Capitalist" Centurion, I was primarily thinking about "original" capitalism, around the time of the First Industrial Revolution - when english "gentlemen" had children, women and men work themselves half-dead for ridiculously low wages, both in their own homeland and abroad on the british provinces. The moneybags of the East-India Company even had private armies at times ! I practically set such a themed figure into a medieval era, and voila, here's our new, hated materialist Rockefeller/Rotschild offspring Centurion. Also note that this was the sort of capitalism that Marx truly criticised. Today, capitalism in regions like Western Europe or North America is a lot more humanitarian, but we shouldn't forget how horrifying it originally started.

Just as planned.

Your a genius MB. I'll huddle around the campfire if your telling the story any day.

Aww, you guys are really starting to flatter me
One thing, Computica; has Cyclohexane or Kuba forwarded the full texts to you ? As a team member, you should have full access to these materials  :???:

I must say, you have done some excelent work on these characters.  However, Gaius seems a lot like a certain blue-skinned Grand Admiral of an equally 'evil' Empire in a galaxy far far away...  A coincidence?

I suppose you mean Admiral Thrawn from the Star Wars books ? I can assure you, if Gaius does resemble Thrawn in any way, it IS a coincidence - especially since I never read the books, I only heard of them.

well written, and has enspired me to take a look at the entire scrapbook of notes i have on my own book that i had planned to write a few years ago.....
