I was enjoying the main quest, but having conquered Friesa, I really don't want to swear loyalty to the Brytenwalda. Is it possible to proceed without doing this?

if you want to play the storyline its like any RPG, you gonna have to follow it 

Or just play sandbox and you are free to conquer the world

In other words, no, it's not possible to proceed along the storyline without joining either Wessex or Northumbria.

Are you sure about this? Because I managed to proceed within the Saxon story-line (but I didn't complete it) by being a mercenary to the Kingdom of Wessex.

Yes I know. I think his problem is that as King he would never swear fealty to another one. But if he was a mercenary I guess it would be less disgraceful.
