So I discovered an interesting way to start a new story game.

Loot Doccinga, or any other village in that region.  Provided you get the troops/skill to do it, you actually have the reputation with their faction such that you can loot and burn one town before they go hostile.  So, with that starting finance boost, I can hardly see financial problems during the very early part of the game.
