Hello Ladies and Gentlemen.

It's been a while since I posted and I'm not entirely sure where to post this so here seems to be out of the way enough not to annoy anyone.

So here's the issue; I upgraded my PC about 6 months ago and for the most part it was running like a dream, it played everything I installed. From M&B to Fallout 3 to Crysis and all on medium or high settings.

Then I began working more and studies caught up with me so I didn't have much play time. About a month ago I had some free time so I decided to play some Fallout 3..Loaded it up and the lag was unbearable, I quickly quit and ran a system cleanup and defrag, checked and updated my drivers etc.

No significant change in computer running speed. I made sure that I had plenty of Hard Drive space and ran every virus scan I had, more defrag and only a slight speed up.

My question is how can a computer suddenly go from a dream machine to the slowest machine I own?
Any ideas on how to regain it's former speed?

System specs

OS: Windows XP Home edition.

CPU: Intel Celeron Dual core 2Ghz (Runs at approx 4GHz)

RAM: 2gig

Video: ATI Radeon 2600 HD PRO (1gig)

Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks.

go to run type MSCONFIG an stop any start up services or currently running services you don't need an see if you have any joy with that.

Thanks for the help, but unfortunately I didn't have any luck. I usually keep my computer running as few programs as possible and it seems even without the non-vital ones that there's not been much change.

I'm completely baffled as to why it's running so slowly out of the blue.

if it is just "suddenly" running slow, it would to me sound like a virus. dealt with alot at work recently an thats the tell tale sign.

Are you sure you haven't bumped the in game details up a bit? your GPU isn't terribly powerful, it wouldn't be able to run the games at maximum settings.

I said High not Max. And not ALL the settings were high, it was a mixture of High and Medium. I'm not trying to show off so I have no reason to lie about what I was able to play, I just want some help with my problem.

Pop the case and give it a good clean out with compressed air. Could just be dust acting as an insulator.
That could likely be the problem, what kind of tool should I use?

So dust on the hardware can effect the speed of software?
Intriguing..

Thanks guys, I'll post here when I've tried it out. It's 8pm here now so I won't be able to test the theory until tomorrow but thanks for your help.

Well, it effects the speed of the hardware.

No, i wasn't saying that you were lying... well, consciously lying. I just thought that perhaps you thought "hmm, what settings... oh well, i'll just shove them on high, i'm sure that's what they were last time i played". Guess that isn't the problem though.

Sorry then, just a misunderstanding. My custom settings were saved from when I played the games last, the very same games which are now even choppy on low settings.

Then I began working more and studies caught up with me

Did you store projects, assigns. in your comp. and did you add/install any other programs after your last play?

coz' if that's the case, it's the same as what happened to me.

I had a fresh install of XP, installed COD 4 finished it with decent settings, not a single stutter, and a level finishes loading before the briefing ends. THen I installed more stuff and when I played again the loads don't finish before the briefings.

Alright guys I cleaned the inside of my tower right out, There was a ****load of dust in there and I've noticed a definite improvement. However it's still slower than it should be, I'm thinking that I might find my xp disk and do a format/re-install, it's kind of a last resort though so if there's any more ideas I'd really appreciate them

before you reinstall the xp,you should try a program that cleans youre Pc.Like TuneUp Utilities, they have a trial, you should try it.Maybe the windows its full with crap (look on Temp Folder).TuneUp Utilities really improves performance.

I cleaned yesterday my graphic card fans and other ventilation inside box, it used to go to 100 Celsius and crash, now it stays about 60-70 C at max when heavy usage and works well. Phew.
