Skills and stacking

The party skills being the only skills that really affect, well....your party, they are of course important to focus on. However, with the help of your companions you don't necessarily need to have all the skills yourself. But does it help if more people have the same skills? As in: Does the game allow you to stack the skill values for a grand total? If I have tactics 4, and two of my companions have 4 and 5 respectively, will I have a total of 13 in tactics for any battle? And do all the party skills work that way? I.e. training, path finding, spotting etc?

only trainer is additive for the xp values, but only spreads to troops below the provider level. the game will only pick the highest INT party skill and add your character's skill as a bonus based on how many points you have into it:
+1 2-4
+2 5-7
+3 8-9
+4 10

if your main character has the highest, then it will use your base and still add the bonus listed above.

on the one hand, while having two companions with the same skill may seem redundant and useless, it can save your life. should your main healer die, you can have a backup one to take over important skills like surgery and pathfinding (for running away after a major defeat).

Big toe I am stealing your words! muhahahaha good info I was looking for a post like this.

I have also bollocksed up my party. I have given them all 4 tactics, at least 6 trainer, 4 surgery and 2 wounding/first aid, as well as 2 pathfinding, and 4 points in their relevant weapon skill and ironflesh. I guess from now on I will focus and assign someone to be surgeon/pathfinder etc.

Having said that, my losses are generally wounded and not killed.

if you don't want to start a new game, i suggest trying the respec minimod:

the mod is just a copy of menus.txt that you swap out temporarily for the export/import function
use the camp feature on the world map to access it.

export each companion, edit the txt file, and reimport. keep in mind that you cannot enter towns when the menus.txt file is replaced so just swap it, export/import, then swap back.

try to keep the points as close to how they started as you can (katrin indeed has 7 into inventory management etc.) and just reallocate what you've changed. don't forget that when you undo pts to intelligence, that you should remove one skill point too. it's easier to take away points and collect them in the attribute_points and skill_points fields then add them manually in the game.

On the other hand, just because the training skill is the only cumulative one doesn't mean that having characters with any other overlapping skill is useless. Skills can't be used if the companion is unconscious, which is why I always keep medics/pathfinders at the bottom of the troop list (so they don't enter battle unless absolutely necessary), and at the moment I've got both Ymira and Jeremus as medics because one of them always gets knocked out in every battle, meaning they can't heal my troops.
