Crazed Rabbit
Squire

The idea is this: add a variable or somesuch to allow EDIT: AI-controlled troops to carry two melee weapons, like a lance and a sword.
One weapon would be for use while on a horse, galloping at the enemy, like the lance, while the other would be used if the knight was dismounted or stuck in the middle of the melee. If they couldn't get their horse moving quickly and there were enemies nearby, they'd automatically switch. Thus, they could, like real knights, use a lance in the initial charge and then a sword once things got 'personal'.
This could also be used for foot soldiers with spears. They could switch to the sword when they got close to the enemy, or to the spear if they were being attacked by horses.
I think this would be not to hard to implement, though I don't know how hard changing the AI would be, and add a lot to the game.
