Well, in the Arena, don't jump right into the fight. If someone comes to you, and you have a short range weapon (Sword) then block, and wait for them to hit, and then strike as fast as you can. With long range weapons (Staff, 2h) hit them before they hit you, and then repeadetly hit them while they are flinching. If they get close when you have a staff, thrust them, and that will push them back, so you can keep your maximum damage.

When you have multiple opponents around you, back pedal at first, then turn and run as much as you can that way. Then stop and turn around, and beat them one at a time.

That's good advice from Mabons.  I'd just add that it took me forever to get used to M&B's combat controls.  I could handle the A-W-S-D movement and the mouse clicking for strikes and blocks.  But I couldn't manage moving the mouse around to be looking correctly at the target (especially when on horseback).  Now after some hours of gameplay it just comes without thinking.  Keep at it m8-- I'm a klutz and I can do, so you will too.

The arena is a tough way to start learning the M&B system. I'd recommend fighting in the open till you're a bit more experienced. The usual Bandits are easy to overcome.

Consider also going to a training field and do some practice with one (or more) of your companions.
If you are still very low level then you could start practicing with some recruit you just got. You gain Xp, they do, all win ^_^

If you intend to be a warrior in the game, you might want to invest into agility, so you can dodge and outmanouvre your enemy :p

When it comes to hitting your opponant you will have far more success if you stay away from thrusts and over head swings intill you are more skilled because those attacks require more accuracy. The side swings though are a no brainer that dosn't require any aiming other then facing in the right general direction of your opponant.

As for blocking I am wondering if maybe you arn't clear on how exactly it works. With a shield its really simple and just clicking the block button is all it takes to block. But if you don't have a shield then you can only block one direction at a time. The direction you choose to block will be random if you block before your opponant has readied a swing so the only way to ensure that you successfully block with a weapon is to wait for them to ready their swing before hitting the block so that the game automatically chooses the appropriate direction to block against. Perhaps its only on the harder diffeculties, but often when you block with your weapon the opponant will stop his readied swing and ready a new swing in an atempt to get past your current block direction which means you need to stop your current block and choose to block again to block from the new direction they have selected. This sometimes happens a half dozen times before they swing or do something else. Rapidly hitting the block button will ensure that your block is for the appropriate direction but if you arn't holding the block button then they might slip one through and hit you.

Take a look at this vid. (not for its quality but you can see diffrent ways of fighting in the area.)

a hint beforehand when your fighting in the area. if you have team mates fight together with them or just let them get beat up while you attack from the side.

If an attack is blocked, the attacker takes increased time to recover. That goes for you and the AI, so wait a little before striking, don't just swing around with your weapon.

Here's the main techniques:
Either move in towards the enemy (don't get too close), then step back when he's about to strike, so you can avoid the hit, then move in again and start slamming him (if he doesn't have a shield he usually won't be able to recover from your repeating blows, if he does he probably will, where you start all of this all over again).
OR
Wait for him to strike first, then block his attack, either with a shield or with your weapon (if he cancels the attack, wait till he makes another, because by the time you notice he'll probably have time to make another one). Block, then strike. It takes a lot more time for him to recover in that scenario, so you can start slamming safely.

Use auto block only until you've gotten used to moving properly. Then switch to manual.

If you have a 2h sword, and your enemy has a short sword, you have a longer reach, so hit them first. Preferably from the left or right, and then youll knock them down. When they're down, hit 'em again. Then they're out cold.
