Sieges and sea battles

Users who are viewing this thread

Some of you may remember the siege mode from 0.300. I'll put that back in once I'm satisfied testing it, and I'm also thinking of a way to work in the sea battles. Because these might not be to everyone's taste, they'll both be player-sponsored missions only.

Both can be tested now if you host a game on your own computer.

I haven't adjusted the catapults. As I recall, you could hit the walls -- it was just very difficult. I think I'd rather err on the side of underpowering them than overpowering them. They're mostly for color, although you can sometimes use them to cause a diversion to lure the bots to one side or the other.

Yep  but i just had to remind you guys about the mod  Its AWESOME

Have catapults in the siege, or have a healt bar at the door. So they must break it to come into the city. That gives the defenders more of a benefit and little more realistic.

It's supposed to be the siege phase of the siege, not an assault, meant to represent stealth raids rather than battering your way in. The doors should actually be barred to attackers from the outside.

Also, catapults historically did not really batter down walls -- and such damage they did cause was over a period of months. They caused casualties, smashed battlements, and sometimes -- if they were very lucky -- smashed a water cistern. But mostly they eroded morale and kept defenders on-edge. Catapults exist in the game but aren't essential tools. They can be a distraction.

Speaking of catapults as distractions, I noticed a semi-functional catapult at the top of the gatehouse. I wasn't able to aim with it or get any bots to stand under its impact area, so I'm not quite sure what it's for. Maybe if it actually raised the alarm for bot agents in a large radius (either make them investigate where the projectile hits or start scattering from the impact site), it would become useful on both sides. To compensate for basically free kills from afar, make catapult kills inflict 0 casualty score.

You should be able to aim it using the arrow keys -- to rotate slightly, and to increase or decrease torsion. Its main use is to cause a distraction.
