This one, is a bit weird.

As i started besieging a certain castle, it had 53 men. while the siege was going on, 3 enemy partys went inside to reinforce the place.
From a 53 men garrison, it went to a 133 !!!. Whats the point of a siege if anyone can just go in ???.

You let them in, during that waiting time it gives you the opportunity to halt, then you can move about the map freely within a certain time period (seiges end at new day) to snag more food, get more troops, or attack reinforcements enroute to your target.

Last night I was griefing some Rhodork scrubs while building the tower, dude had 40 units and he happend to leave the castle for a quick moment for no reason. I halted then whooped his ass out on the field then only had to siege the garrison.

Sieges are sieges because of the entire effort to capture enemy territory; the battle is usually on multiple levels from simple outnumbering, starvation, morale, and controlling an area and its trade. Just because youre not at the castle doorstep doesnt mean the siege has ended, have to control the area and the situation.

In Shadowbane, sieges were mostly fought outside the city walls, the offense were outside of wall archer range with Trebuchets that damage the walls to make a whole, 75% of the fights where out in the field to control the trebuchet area and to tackle the Banestone (item that initiates and ends the siege).

Only once the walls had holes then the offense advanced closer with new trebuchets that could reach deeper into the city and protected their siege weapons and banestone.

I forsee MONSTER sieges happening in the final version, where sieges last a week or more because you gotta whittle down the defense one battle at a time.

Lord I hope so, that would be epic.

I too keep having people try to run in and out of a castle.  Mayhaps there should be a battle or skirmish where an opposing party has to fight through the lines.

I like that in the Battle for Sicily mod you are sent out to gather supplies for the sieging army, also those besieged had the option to "Sally Forth" and would try to break the siege.

Edit: Fixed that... Thanks Jay Kayell

Still, seems kind of stupid to let groups of soldiers come and go as they please.

Also you have to make a passage into the enemy fortress to attack, the basic principle of any siege, and I know you do more than block their door

Sieges in the final version will probably be a bit more dependet on good planning, not like it is now where you just gather up a large force and take the nearest castle.

P.S I don´t know what Shadowbane is

The Specialist: I think you got us mixed up there

Not only that, I see city under siege by swadians, but caravans go in and out, both neutral enemy and frendly, my party goes in and out unchecked too?!? What kind of siege is that? Sieged towns should be off limits, attacker should block his enemies, defender his, and both should be kicking neutrals out. Its a siege after all, the whole idea is blokade...

Erm, you do know that medieval sieges have no relation to sieges in an MMO, right?  Most castles were not taken by storm, but by siege.  The whole idea is to keep people from going in and out.

I don't see how any of the enemy can Just come and go in a siege, Doesn't a siege mean that you have surrounded the castle and nothing can get in or out?

To be honest it's probably just a bug that will be fixed. When there's a seige, nothing gets in or out.

I'm thinking about BfS and the multiple siege battles gameplay also.

I'm pretty sure sieging is going to get better and better. We haven't seen nothing yet, just the beginning!

A terrible idea.
Ingolifs would STEAL christmas from Talewords!

But anyway, yes, a seige would be quite pointless if you just let people bring more food in or leave to get reinforcements or bring in reinforcements.

Aye, I agree with that. Though the AI should also be able to select to counter-attack at the same time, so it basically leaves two options in such a case:
a) you intercept the opposing party trying to break through your lines
b) both the reinforcing party as well as the castle's defenders come out of their holes and try to attack you from both sides

The total war series simplifies sieges on an epic scale.

If only it had been so simple as to stand outside a city for a few weeks and wait...

There's not really much more to it that'd be intresting in the game. You block all routes in and out of the castle, you harass the enemy, the enemy harasses you, sometimes they get reinforcements to try and break it, sometimes they rally. What else would there be?

Hey, if a 20 man army is doing the siege, and they are busy chopping wood in the forest for their siege engine..... then by all means, people can sneak in and out of the gates.  A real medieval sieging army would naturally be large enough to cover all the bases (i.e. all the various gates, and yes, the gates on the other side too, *cough* Rome Total war exploits)

A siege doesn't necessarily hold everyone in, but a good siege will.  Thus in M&B, I think you need to make sure no one can go in and out.  I think running around the castle and killing off any armies that approach would appropriately simulate "covering" all the bases.  Perhaps improvements can be made by allowing extra "coverage" for slow moving yet numerous armies.

If I'm not mistaken, when Rome sieged Jerusalem, many of the Jews would sneak out and walk amongst the ranks of the Romans as spies.

I have a question though .... how does an attacker lift a siege?  Do I have to travel far enough away before all my siege efforts are canceled?

Secret passages, night attacks, traitors, battering rams, sappers, big falling rocks...lots more.
